Bačka Topola ( Serbian - Cyrillic Бачка Топола , Hungarian Topolya ) is a town in the Severna Bačka district in Vojvodina in Serbia . It is the seat of the Opština Bačka Topola and has 16,171 inhabitants (2002).

Bačka Topola is located in the Bačka region . The city is located in the north of Vojvodina. The surrounding area is largely flat, where the north-south and east-west directions intersect. There is a temperate continental climate, which benefits agriculture. The region's soil is considered to be very fertile. The city is 32 km away from Subotica , 45 km from Sombor and 69 km from Novi Sad .

According to the 2002 census, the city had around 16,171 inhabitants (in 1991 there were 16,704 inhabitants). a. circa. 59.25% Hungarians , 29.05% Serbs , 2.63% Montenegrins , 2.32% Yugoslavs , 1.05% Croats 1.35% Slovaks , 0.75% and Russians , 0.58%
history
The oldest mention of a settlement dates back to 1462 under the name Fibaych . At that time it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary . The Ottomans conquered the area around 1526 . The Slavic or Serbian name Topola appears for the first time in Ottoman land registers around 1543 . Towards the end of the 16th century, Ottoman land registers number around 21 to 23 Serb households in the village. In 1688 Topola is conquered by the Austrian Empire in the course of the Turkish wars , and around 1704 destroyed by the Kuruc . In reports from 1731 the village is considered depopulated. A resettlement takes place in 1750 with around 200 Hungarians and Slovaks . In 1918 the mostly Hungarian community was assigned to Yugoslavia .

There are several Roman Catholic church buildings in the city , such as the St. Mary's Church , built from 1904 to 1906 in the city center, or the Sacred Heart Church , built from 1992 to 2005 .
The Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Prophet Elias , built between 1932 and 1940, is also located in Bačka Topola .
