Cothelstone Manor with the Church of St Thomas in the background

Cothelstone Manor in Cothelstone , Somerset , England was built in the mid-16th century, largely destroyed by parliamentary troops in 1646, and rebuilt by EJ Esdaile in 1855-1856.

The construction is closely related to the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury , which is also listed under Grade I and includes tombs of a number of owners of Cothelstone Manors. These include Matthew de Stawell, who died in 1379, and his wife Elizabeth, and John Stawell, who died in 1603.

history

Cothelstone Manor received Adam de Coveston from William the Conqueror , and has since been a home on the site that has been owned by only two different families throughout history.

During the English Civil War , John Stawell fought on the side of the royalists. When he went to London in 1646, with his surrender signed by Thomas Fairfax, he was incarcerated for treason and Oliver Cromwell ordered the demolition of his Elizabethan house by cannon fire. Only the left wing and the ground floor of the central wing remained and were abandoned. The land was put up for sale in 1651. After the monarchy was restored and Charles II was crowned King of England and Ireland at Westminster Abbey in 1661 , John Stawell regained his seat in Parliament, but died the following year.

Some repairs have been carried out and the house has been significantly reduced in size. It served as a farmhouse for the next two centuries. The Banqueting Hall, which was probably a widow's house and was expanded in the 19th century, has withstood time.

The property, which consisted of eleven farmhouses, 54  cottages and two residential houses, was purchased by Edward Jeffries in 1792. He died in 1814 and the house became the property of his grandson Edward Jeffries Esdaile, who married a daughter of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley . Esdaile built Cothelstone House between 1817 and 1820 as a new home. This building was torn down in 1968. Esdaile also rebuilt the old mansion from 1855-1856, based on the style in which it was inhabited by the Stawells before the Civil War. Esdaile died in 1867.

It now serves as a venue for family celebrations and corporate events and was also a location for feature films.

Gatehouse

The 16th century gatehouse was classified as a Grade I building.

Property and outbuildings

The driveway

In the Middle Ages , the property included an animal enclosure on Cothelstone Hill, about 1.3 km away.

To the north and east of the house are gardens, which together have an area of one hectare and were laid out as a model farm in 1867 , within the medieval park, which is now classified in the English Heritage National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens .

The triple archway was built in the 16th century and originally stood over the street and not at the driveway, but was moved before 1908. At the end of the Monmouth Rebellion and the defeat of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth , at the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685, two men were hanged from the archway.

To the southeast of the main house is a cluster of farm buildings dating from 1867 and earlier, some of which are arranged around the 16th century Cushuish Farmhouse.

To the northwest of the 16th century stables and coach house is an 18th century pavilion and grotto .

Also on the site is a well house with a bust made of ashlar , which dates from 1500 and was modeled on Agnes Cheyney, who was married to the owner Edward Stowel. It still serves as the water supply for the manor house and the cattle and has been renovated.

On the border at the north end of the park on Cothelstone Hill is the ruin of a Folly . The ruin of the building made of quarry stone is 9 m high. The year of construction is not known. The ruins partially collapsed in the 1990s.

The estate extends beyond the boundaries of the parish of Cothelstone to Bishops Lydeard .
