The Gallus Theater is an independent theater in Frankfurt am Main .

The theater is part of the Association Internationales Solidaritätszentrum e. V. emerged. In 1975 the association moved into the premises of a former car repair shop in Krifteler Straße, where the multinational cultural center Gallus-Zentrum was initially established. It quickly developed into a focal point for cultural work with foreign young people from the district. 1978 was here u. a. Founded the "Teatro Siciliano" on the initiative of the British theater director Brian Michaels . Under his leadership, the theater company I MACAP, made up of young Italian migrants, quickly achieved international renown. With increasing success, the "Gallus Theater" established itself - under a new name from 1983 - as a venue for independent theater groups in Frankfurt's cultural scene.

The name of the theater refers to its special place, the Gallusviertel . Originally located near the city's gallows field, one of the city's largest industrial areas has developed here since the end of the 19th century in the northern vicinity of the railway tracks of the main train station. Around the same time - in the shadow of the prosperous city of Frankfurt - disadvantaged workers' living quarters with a high concentration of migrant workers emerged in the immediate vicinity.

At the suggestion of the Frankfurt planning officer Martin Wentz, the theater was given a new location in 1998 on the site of the former Adlerwerke . In 2003 it celebrated its 25th anniversary with contributions from a total of 30 independent theater groups. The Gallus Theater is a rehearsal stage and venue for the independent theater and artist scene from the Rhine-Main area and is known for its children's and youth theater work. It cooperates with various theaters and festivals as well as with the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts . Since 1997 the Gallus Theater has been co-organizer of Visionale , the largest film festival for children and young people in Hesse. In 2016 it was the venue of the dance platform Germany .

Winfried Becker has been artistic director since 1985 and Heike Bonzelius has been artistic director since the same year.
