The Fritz Rémond Theater is a small private theater in Frankfurt am Main . It is located in the zoo company building on the grounds of the Frankfurt Zoo , after which it is also known as the "Fritz Rémond Theater in the Zoo".

history

On January 4, 1947, the actor and director Fritz Rémond (1902–1976) from Cologne founded the “Small Theater in the Zoo” at the suggestion of the zoo director Bernhard Grzimek . According to the theater, the purpose of the collaboration between the theater and the zoo was to mutually attract a large number of visitors.

As one of the first theaters founded after the war, the “Small Theater in the Zoo” first tried to meet the pent-up demand of contemporary drama and staged plays that had been suppressed or forbidden during the Nazi era. Strindberg's play “Rausch” was given as the opening performance. Works by Carl Zuckmayer , W. Somerset Maugham , and George Bernhard Shaw were on the program as well as works by Jean Anouilh , Arthur Schnitzler , Gerhart Hauptmann and Henrik Johan Ibsen .

The theater director Rémond succeeded time and again in bringing prominent actors to his small theater, including Curd Jürgens , Karlheinz Böhm , Martin Held , Inge Meysel and Heinz Rühmann . Hans-Joachim "Kuli" Kulenkampff and Boy Gobert began their stage careers here.

In 1976 Fritz Rémond died. On the occasion of his death, the house was renamed "Fritz Rémond Theater". Lothar Baumgarten, a long-time companion and stage designer Rémonds, took over the management of the house. His son, Egon Baumgarten, took over the house in 1985.

In 1995 the now heavily indebted theater threatened to close. Following a call from the city of Frankfurt, the director of the Frankfurt theater " Die Komödie ", Claus Helmer , took over the house.

today

At the beginning of 2017 the Fritz Rémond Theater (the "Small Theater in the Zoo") celebrated its 70th anniversary. With more than 60,000 spectators in more than 250 performances for years, the house is well occupied in the 2015/2016 season.

In around five productions a year, both classical and contemporary works are presented to the public. Both comedies and serious dramas are on the program .

In the Fritz Rémond Theater, cheerful and serious, classic and contemporary, sublime and light, entertainment and thoughtfulness should join hands.
