Martin Held (born November 11, 1908 in Berlin ; † January 31, 1992 there ; born Martin Erich Fritz Held ) was a German theater and film actor .

Life

The son of foreman Albert Max Julius Held and his wife Emma, née Reimann, first completed an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic at Siemens. In 1929 he was accepted at the University of Music and Performing Arts , where he was trained as an actor until 1931.

Held made his debut in 1931 in a graduating performance of Before Sunset . In 1931/32 he played at the State Theater for East and West Prussia in Königsberg and Tilsit , 1933/34 at the Albert Theater in Dresden, 1934/35 at the Elbing City Theater , from 1935 to 1937 at the Bremerhaven City Theater and from 1937 to 1941 at the Darmstadt State Theater . From 1941 to 1951 he was part of the ensemble of the Frankfurt Municipal Theaters .

In Frankfurt in 1947, Held played General Harras in the German premiere of Carl Zuckmayer's Des Teufels General . In 1951 Boleslaw Barlog appointed him to the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin , where Held was a member of the ensemble until his death. There he played with stage actors such as Bernhard Minetti , Carl Raddatz , Wilhelm Borchert and Horst Bollmann and under directors such as Fritz Kortner and Hans Lietzau .

In Samuel Beckett's staging of the German-language premiere of his play The Last Volume , Held played the leading role. Because of his diabetes , Held, who also worked as a radio play speaker, had to retire from the theater in 1985, but afterwards still occasionally appeared with poetry readings .

His manner of depiction, which tends towards irony, his versatile facial expressions and his unmistakable voice were also used in film and television from 1951 onwards. In Canaris he played Reinhard Heydrich, the opponent of the title hero. In Der Hauptmann von Köpenick he was the imperious, but extremely submissive Mayor Obermüller towards the wrong captain. Other roles were the historically charged public prosecutor Dr. Schramm in roses for the public prosecutor as well as the rogue higher regional judge a. D. Zänker in The Gentlemen in the White Waistcoat .

As a voice actor he lent a. a. Pedro Armendáriz ( Diane - Courtesan of France ), EG Marshall ( The Caine was her destiny ), Edmond O'Brien ( reluctant sex man ) and Roland Young ( The Last Weekend ) his voice.

Private

Held was married to the actress Lilo Dietrich in his first marriage. Their son Thomas (* 1943) committed suicide in 1961. In 1967 Held married the actress Lore Hartling . From this marriage the sons Albert (* 1964) and Maximilian (* 1967) emerged. Albert Held is now working at the Volkstheater Vienna , Maximilian Held is also an actor.

Martin Held rests, with his wife Lore and his son Thomas, in the forest cemetery in Zehlendorf in Dept. XIII-W-525, since November 2010 it has been an honorary grave of the State of Berlin .

His written estate is in the archive of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
