Hauptsache Ferien is a German comedy film by Peter Weck from 1972 with the main actors Peter Alexander and Christiane Hörbiger as well as Theo Lingen , Marietta Schupp and Martin Held . The idea for the story comes from Horst Wendlandt under the pseudonym HO Gregor.
The premiere of this last feature film with Peter Alexander took place on September 14, 1972.

Dr. Peter Markus is a teacher at a grammar school that is very popular with his students and, like them, is already looking forward to the holidays. For the student Corinna Kannenberg, however, the prospects are not so good because her transfer is in danger. In order to avoid a repetition of the school year, the lazy girl comes up with the idea of employing the building contractor Kannenberg, Corinna's father, who should unceremoniously choose Markus as the winner of a competition. Dr. Markus took part in this competition because it is his big dream to own his own house, in which he can live with his daughter Gaby and the goldfish Otto. And the main prize in said competition is a prefabricated house. The truth of how he got his price is only to be found out to Markus after he has moved in, which could then be used to blackmail Corinna's transfer.
And so workers commissioned by Kannenberg soon started to work on the lucky winner's property. Corinna's older sister Ursula oversees the work as an architect. She does not know the plan of father and sister. When she falls in love with Peter Markus, who reciprocates her feelings, she wants to reveal to him at the topping-out what she had just learned before, but in the hustle and bustle, she doesn't get to it.
When Kannenberg then tells his daughter's teacher what his "profit" is all about, he has to experience that Dr. Markus is immune to his attempts at bribery and extortion. It is bad, however, that the jealous colleague Brammer, who is always looking for a reason to wipe out Markus, has got wind of the matter.
Dr. Markus is suspended from duty. With the help of his friend Dr. Hebbel hatches a plan for Markus to fool Kannenberg for his part. The friends pretend to be tax officials and check Kannenberg's documents. In this way they get the entrepreneur to clarify the whole matter with Markus' manager, who has been rehabilitated and nothing stands in the way of his happiness with Ursula.

It is a joint production by Rialto Film Preben Philipsen and Terra Filmkunst GmbH, Berlin, distributed by Constantin-Film. There the film was advertised with the words: “A comedy about a turbulent home-building with humor, love and music.” Or also: A wonderful film full of summer joy and humor. The English title is Main Thing Holidays .

Producer Horst Wendlandt and director Peter Weck were only able to persuade the new TV show star Peter Alexander to make his last feature film with great difficulty . They drove to see him in Lugano especially for this purpose . At the urging of his wife Hilde, who had negotiated a fee of 400,000 DM, he agreed. The first two weeks took place in the studio in Berlin, the exterior shots were mostly taken at a lake in Upper Bavaria.
For leading actress Christiane Hörbiger, Hauptsache Ferien brought back a film role after several years: "At that time I mainly played theater and was very happy about this offer with Peter Alexander."
