Arch Oboler

Arch Oboler (* 7. December 1907 in Chicago , Illinois ; † 19th March 1987 in Westlake Village , California ) was an American author of radio plays , playwright , screenwriter , writer , film producer and director who for radio, film, theater and television worked.

Oboler grew up as the son of Jewish immigrants in Chicago. His parents, Leon and Clara Oboler, came from Riga. Arch Oboler briefly studied at the University of Chicago before starting his career in the entertainment industry.

Oboler made a name for himself above all as an author of radio plays. Although now often associated primarily with the horror genre, he was widely touted as one of the broadcasters' greatest talents in the 1930s and 1940s. To this day he is regarded as one of the most important and innovative radio play authors.

When Oboler sold his first radio play, he was not yet 18 years old. He later became famous through his work on the horror series Lights Out! known, for which he wrote regularly from 1936.
