RC Sherriff (born June 6, 1896 in Hampton Wick , Kingston upon Thames , † November 13, 1975 in Esher ; actually Robert Cedric Sherriff ) was an English writer and screenwriter .

Life

The son of an insurance employee worked as an insurance officer and wrote dramas for the amateur stage on the side. In the First World War, in which he participated from 1915 to 1918, he was seriously wounded in 1917. He then worked for another ten years in his bread-and-butter profession.

In 1928 he made his breakthrough with his piece The Other Side . This play about the harrowing reality of war premiered in London at the Apollo Theater with Laurence Olivier . With the support of George Bernard Shaw , who recommended the piece to be performed, it made the author known in England and the USA, despite opposition from patriotic circles. In 1930 he wrote a version of the novel with Vernon Bartlett.

From 1931 he studied for two years at New College in Oxford . He then settled in Hollywood , where he worked as a screenwriter. In 1940 he was nominated for an Oscar for Goodbye, Mr. Chips . He continued to write plays and novels, including the science fiction novel The Hopkins Manuscript (1939, German The moon falls on Europe ), published after the war under the title The Cataclysm , in which the moon falls on earth. According to John Clute , the catastrophe novel is quite atmospheric, but in view of the misjudgment of the consequences of such an impact and the misunderstanding of the catastrophe that was actually imminent in 1939, it is now rather obsolete. In contrast, Reclam's science fiction guide said that The Hopkins Manuscript was one of the best SF disaster novels, "although chauvinistic and Western-pessimistic undertones cannot be ignored." Ultimately, however, Sherriff could no longer build on the success of The Other Side .
