Almost a Held (other titles: Der Kommandant von Molinette and Die Abenteuer des Braven Kommandanten Küppers ) is a German-Yugoslavian fictional film by director Rainer Erler from 1967 with Martin Held in the title role. It was premiered in the Federal Republic of Germany on August 22, 1967.

action

Towards the end of the Second World War in the fictional French mountain village of Molinette: The place is occupied by German troops. Because of a sleeping pill that his French friend Hélène served him, the German corporal Karl Küppers missed the march of his company to Russia . With the help of the determined French woman, he becomes the local commander . More in felt slippers than in boots, he rules as the “father of the country” for the benefit of all villagers. With the forms and stamps that were also left behind, he helped the population to gain some advantages, such as permits and building materials, he brought back sons who were obliged to serve and brokered barter deals.

General brotherhood is underway, as the Allies the invasion succeeds. Now the “ Boche ” is a “Boche” again, and collaboration a dreaded accusation; you also rediscover the patriotic feeling. And so there is a lot of joy when Küppers as the last crew man is picked up by the German military police. The fraud is blown and Küppers is sentenced to death. But the transport that was supposed to take him to the execution was ambushed by the Resistance , and Küppers - together with the firing squad - was taken prisoner.

20 years later, Küppers comes back to the village as a tourist and looks back at the old events.

annotation

Actress Wera Engels , once a star of late silent and early talkies with Hollywood experience, returned to the camera after 30 years in this film with a tiny supporting role. It should also be her last film appearance.

Reviews

"A nice role for Martin Held in the not very believable, but friendly and entertainingly staged" war "comedy by Rainer Erler, which was a German-Yugoslav coproduction."

“The amusing and thoughtful story of a German soldier who advanced to the command of a French village and lived there in harmony with the residents until reality put an end to the idyll. Recommended for ages 14 and up. "
