The rank of Corporal is determined by the Federal President with the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of the soldiers on the basis of the Soldiers Act .
Authority to command and positions
In the German Armed Forces, the corporal is a rank of the men who belong to the rank group of the teams according to the Central Service Regulations (ZDv) A-1420/24 "Ranks and Rank Groups" . Because they belong to the rank group of the teams, corporal corporations can not issue orders to anyone solely on the basis of their rank on the basis of Section 4 (“Superiors relationship based on rank”) . Like all team ranks, Corporals cannot declare themselves to be superiors according to § 6 ("Superiors on the basis of their own declaration") of the Superiors Ordinance, even in emergencies .
Corporals have generally completed the basic training , the training as security and guard soldiers and in the career of the crews usually a special basic training intended for the intended use, often course-related , and can now be deployed to posts in the troops where they can use what they have learned in the Deepen practice. Corporals in the career group of the teams are used, for example, as drivers , as infantrymen , in guard duty or as operators of weapon systems (e.g. as a gunner of armored vehicles ), as mechanics , or as an assistant in staff . Due to these and similar positions and their technically mostly narrowly limited areas of responsibility, Corporals can issue orders to all officially or professionally subordinate soldiers in the cases listed in the Superiors Ordinance and within the limits specified there.
Appointment and remuneration
The decisive legal basis for the appointment as corporal is the Soldier's Career Ordinance (SLV) and, in addition, the Central Service Regulations (ZDv) 20/7. Temporary soldiers , voluntary military service and assigned reservists of all careers can be appointed as corporal . Soldiers can be appointed corporal six months after entering service in the Bundeswehr. The rank of corporal, like the rank of corporal and corporal, does not have to be passed. Therefore, Corporal of the category of teams directly to Corporal, Corporal, or upper Corporal be appointed. Correspondingly, private members of the career groups of NCOs can be appointed NCOs or mate, and private members of the officers' career group can be appointed Fahnenjunker or midshipmen . In these cases, the rank of corporal (possibly also subsequent ranks) is "skipped". As a rule, soldiers in the rank of private are promoted to corporal.
Time soldiers in rank Obergefreiter after the Bundesbesoldungsgesetz order (BBesO) with A 4 remunerated . Instead, those doing voluntary military service and reservists are given military pay according to the Military Pay Act .
Rank badge
The rank badge for corporal corporal shows two diagonal stripes on both epaulettes and for naval uniform wearers on the upper sleeves .
history
Most of those doing basic military service were dismissed with this rank as "Corporal of the Reserve " (OGefr d. R.).
Equivalent, subordinate and superior ranks
Army, air force and naval uniform bearers lead the rank of corporal. In the NATO armed forces, the corporal is equivalent to all ranks with the NATO rank code OR-3. According to the NATO rank code, the rank of the German Armed Forces is comparable, for example, with the private first class of the armed forces of the United States .
According to ZDv 20/7, the corporal is classified above the lower-ranking corporal and below the higher-ranking main corporal in the career group of the teams .

Former German armed forces
In Prussia, who was enlisted rank Lance Corporal by AKO created of 6 January 1846 and abolished by AKO again on 21 April. 1853 In the Prussian foot artillery the rank was (again) introduced in 1859 and usually distinguished the gunner ; the rank thus replaced the lowest Bombardier artillery non-commissioned officers established in 1730 . In the other branches of the German Army and in the Imperial Navy , the rank of corporal was not used. It was only introduced in all German arms and troops at the end of 1919 after the establishment of the Provisional Reichswehr .
The badge was initially a small eagle button on the collar flaps of the skirt and coat (the eagle button was passed on to the corporal without a badge in 1853), since 1859 a large eagle button and non-commissioned officer tassel (in the national colors) on the side arm (saber, bayonet). This is how the term button soldier came about in soldiers' jargon .
Since January 1921, the badge in the Reichswehr consisted of three angles made of sergeant stress; in the Wehrmacht since October 1936 two Tressenwinkel (with more than six years of total service also four-pointed star in Tressenwinkel).

- ↑ Active soldiers are usually appointed corporal after six months of service . Formally, in the sense of the Soldier Career Ordinance , it is an optional provision . Since there are usually enough permanent positions available and the rank of corporal does not have any other special requirements, promotion to corporal is only denied in practice in the event of exceptionally poor performance or a gross disciplinary violation . For reservists it applies accordingly that the transport can only take place six months after entering into a corresponding employment relationship. Reservists and active soldiers are treated on an equal footing insofar as reservists are appointed to this rank no earlier than for soldiers who “remained” in a different military service relationship. In this respect, reservists are treated as if they had served in the Bundeswehr without interruption. For reservists, however, the period of service is usually much shorter overall, since only a relatively few days of military service, for example in the form of military exercises, have to be performed before being appointed to a higher rank.
- ↑ In practice, "skipping" ranks is very rare. The prerequisite is that the other conditions of the Soldiers' Career Ordinance for the appointment to a higher rank are met, especially with regard to the length of service. As a rule, teams go through the ranks in the usual order of private , lance-corporal , lance-corporal , lance-corporal , lance-corporal . Soldiers of other careers initially serve in the rank of private and corporal and then move up to the rank group of non-commissioned officers .
