action

Six directors from Italy, France and Germany have taken on the subject of “love for sale” in the course of human history. The development of prostitution is viewed in six eras, which comprise a total of 4000 years.

First episode: "2000 years before Christ"

One day in prehistoric times a young trader comes to a village to which all young, pretty girls are addicted, including the attractive Brit. But the stranger doesn't want to know anything about her. In desperation, Brit asks the settlement's cave painter for advice. He promises to help her. The painter mixes several colors and carefully applies them to Brit's face - make-up was invented. Brit's change of face has a stunning effect, the young dealer, like all other men, is suddenly on fire for the girl. But now she is starting to adorn herself and wondering whether this new desire that the men have for her might not be able to make some good business. From now on Brit will receive presents from every man to whom she shows her favor and with whom she shares the camp. Prostitution is born.

Second episode: "Roman Nights"

In ancient Rome around the year 300, the sexual desire between Emperor Flavius and his wife Domitilla has long been extinguished. Every day is the same: rule, have a festive dinner, followed by extensive bathing fun. Then go to bed ... but nothing happens there. But after Domitilla fell asleep, Flavius gets up again, throws himself into shabby clothes in order not to be recognized, sneaks out of the palace and goes out to sleep for the night to be pampered by the ladies in late Roman decadence. In his regular brothel, the puff mother praises a "new addition" that should be tough. An expensive, oriental courtesan has done it to him. Flavius buys a night of love with her and has to discover that it is his own wife, the Empress. Nevertheless, both have their pleasure; because a different bed, a different house and a different ambience also inspire new enthusiasm.

Third episode: "Mademoiselle Mimi"

France shortly after 1789. With heads rolling for the victory of the revolution , the executioner has plenty to do. On the way to his workplace, the prostitute Mimi regularly pleases him in the carriage. From her little room she has a literal lodges overlooking the bloody events on the farm where the guillotine down rushes in the chord. The whore is popularly known as "Mimi la Guillotine". When she returns to her apartment one day from work, a young boy is waiting there who calls himself Philibert and claims that he is an artist. But he is by no means looking for pleasure between her legs, rather the nephew of a marquis wants to secure her box seat. Mimi is more than astonished and only sends the attractive and, due to the upcoming inheritance of his deceased uncle, also wealthy youngster, who in her eyes could be an interesting future customer, out of the room again when the next suitor wants to get his rights. On the street, Philibert meets a friend with whom he obviously had a bet, because he says that he didn't have to pay anything to the whore Mimi and still got his pleasure.

Fourth episode: "Miss Nini"

Berlin at the time of the Belle Epoque , shortly before the turn of the century. The whore Nini is infatuated with Kaiser Wilhelm II , but only because his likeness is emblazoned on the 1000 Mark bill. Therefore, she deliberately looks out for an older, wealthy-looking gentleman in her local pub, in the hope that she will soon be able to call his majesty her own in the form of this banknote . Her "victim" is called Eduard and is, in all Nini's loot scheme, obviously wealthy. You go to your apartment and you have sex . While Eduard is slumbering blissfully in his bed, Nini rummages through his things and collects two Kaiser Wilhelms for their love services without being asked. She is just about to run away when Edward's business card falls at her feet. From this she not only learns that her client is the owner of the largest Berlin bank , but also bears the pompous title “Baron von Hannover”. Nini changes her mind ... and stays. When Eduard wants to pay her for her services the next day, she tells him that she does not want to accept his money because she has seriously fallen in love with him. Nini asks Eduard about his job, but he presses around. Thereupon Nini tells him on the head that she thinks he is a very poor eater and gives him back the 2,000 marks he has not yet missed, not without telling Eduard that she would like to pay him, especially since he has the money yes more urgently than you need. The baron is amazed and believes he has a true Madonna, a saint before him. For Nini, however, the failure to win two Kaiser Wilhelms will always pay off, as she now has real chances of becoming the next Baroness.

Fifth episode: "The Amazons Today"

Paris now, around 1966. Catherine is a motorized curb swallow who picks up her customers from the street with her 65 hp car, an Amazon of today. With her moving pouf, Catherine believes, she keeps the trouble with custom off her neck; unlike if she were waiting for her customers on the street. Her boss and at the same time best friend Dana makes sure that the police do not attack her. But one day the traffic police found out their secret about the brothel and forbade this "activity". But the two women come up with something and without further ado change the wheeled vehicle to an ambulance! With it you have a lot more space, and a bed in the vehicle is also provided.

Sixth episode: "Anticipation - A Weekend on Earth in 2000"

We write the turn of the millennium. Humans have conquered space and colonized alien planets. There is a lot of travel between the planets and galaxies. Passenger 14, the transit guest Demetrius, gets off one of these journeys from galaxy 46. Since there are problems with his connecting flight at the spaceport in Paris, he lets himself be taken to a hotel and chooses a girl from the range for every kind of amusement. It is the hostess 703, a girl who calls herself Natascha, but who does not master physical love, but rather the gestures of love - the presentation of feelings through words. But this kind of love is unknown to Nick alias Demetrius from his home galaxy. He's learning something new. The next woman, Marlene, speaks, but she doesn't know Natascha's gestures, only physical love. Finally the traveler rediscovers the forgotten variety of love in the form of a kiss and deeply felt affection. But with that he comes up against the limits of what is allowed in this futuristic world, because true feelings are punishable. The time and world of this epoch has become a nightmare for all lovers.

Reviews

The reviews of the six-episode strip were largely negative. Only the quality of the last contribution, which was directed by Jean-Luc Godard, received general recognition. Godard's episode Anticipation , of all things , was taken out of the distribution after the premiere for theatrical use in Germany.

“Six episodic variations on the theme clearly expressed in the title. Five episodes are intended to serve as entertainment in a comical exaggeration and contain some strong frivolities, the sixth episode (...) is a nightmarish vision of the future. From 18 with reservations. "

- Protestant film observer

On April 28, 1967, Die Zeit read: “Prostitution filmed five times, prostituted film five times. The sixth episode, which denied the other five, that of Jean-Luc Godard, is very worth seeing, but unfortunately not to be seen: The rental company cut it off. "

"Jean-Luc Godard, possibly the least lewd filmmaker in the world, contributes the only really funny episode to" The World's Oldest Trade ", otherwise this is a non-comedy in six parts about fornication in the different ages (... With the exception of Godard's contribution ... this film is a painfully awkward botch, made by some otherwise interesting directors like Mauro Bolognini, Phillipe De Broca, and Claude Autant-Lara. (...) Godard's "Anticipation", however, is very pleasant - a kind of happy footnote to his " Alphaville ", filmed in brilliant, low-contrast black and white on gold, red, blue and black. "

- Vincent Canby : The New York Times, November 8, 1968

In kino.de it says about Godard's episode: "Again he revolves around prostitution as a central metaphor for everyone, including utopian society. The unity of body and mind is not possible in an alienated society, so there is love that can be bought. The future looks like in “Alphaville” or “Made in USA” always looks like the slightly dated present. "

In the lexicon of international films it is written: “The love that can be bought from the Stone Age to the present, presented by six directors with crude personalities in words and pictures. An episode film that only finds a style that is acceptable for the topic in Michael Pflegehar's funny contribution "Fräulein Nini". "
