Jean Richard (born April 18, 1921 in Bessines , Deux-Sèvres ; † December 12, 2001 in Senlis , Oise ) was a French actor , director and circus director , a popular comedian in the cinema, and in later years a respected character star on series television .

Live and act

Richard began his professional career in 1939 as a comic artist and caricaturist and switched to the theater at the end of the war in 1945, when he staged several plays in occupied Germany. In 1947 he attended the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique and subsequently appeared on stage for almost three decades (until 1976). In the early post-war years, Richard also worked in one or two French film productions in Paris . In 1950 Richard finally returned to his homeland, presented revues in the Paris cabaret 'L'amiral' and now appeared regularly in front of the film camera.

Jean Richard's strengths lay primarily in the comedic subject, where he got numerous supporting and a few leading roles. In 1959 and 1961 he also gave guest appearances in (federal) German film. Richard often played peasant characters without listing them as dumb village idiots. Jean Richard's love, however, belonged above all to the ring: since 1955 he had his own circus with which he gave numerous guest performances at home and abroad (including Germany).

The versatile artist became known far beyond the borders of his homeland, above all for the role of the pipe-smoking Commissioner Maigret , whom he has played in a long-lived television series since 1967. Some episodes ran in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1972 on ARD and from 1979 to 1984 on ZDF . In 1988, several Maigret episodes were broadcast on East German television.

Outside of work, Richard is committed to animal welfare.
