A woman is a woman (original title: Une Femme est une Femme ) is a French musical comedy in the style of Nouvelle Vague by Jean-Luc Godard from 1961. It was Jean-Luc Godard's first feature film to be shot in Cinemascope , besides, it is his first color film. The film is about a burlesque dancer , Angela, who has an immediate desire to have children, her boyfriend, Émile, but does not want to get involved so quickly. In order to achieve her goal, Angela Émile threatens to have a child with his best friend, Alfred.
action
The bookseller Émile and the stripper Angela seem to have a completely normal relationship life with all its ups and downs. However, when the young woman reveals to her boyfriend out of the blue that she wants to be made into a mother in the next few hours, Émile's heart sucks and he shows little satisfaction. However, when she insists and says that if necessary she would also let her mutual friend Alfred, who has been keeping an eye on Angela for a long time, get pregnant, Émile reacts indifferently and in anger even replies that she should do it calmly, if it makes you happy.
criticism
“A woman is a woman” was generally received positively by the critics. The film got a rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 30 reviews. At Metacritic one could Metascore of 71, 11 reviews, achieved based.
Ty Burr says A Woman is a Woman is "the most playful film in the French Nouvelle Vague, and it also seems to be the last Jean-Luc Godard film that he had fun with."
The Lexicon of International Film also analyzed the cinematic means; the film, “Godard's first attempt at direct sound, color and cinemascope is inspired by the musicals and Hollywood comedies of the 1930s. Godard, however, does not naively copy the models, but analyzes their elements (e.g. music, color); he is less interested in the story told than in the narrative method. Therefore, the performers sometimes speak directly to the audience, and this is why printed words appear on the screen for the first time. Nevertheless, this 'idea of a musical' (Godard) turned out to be an utterly irrelevant film. "
