Crocidura vorax is a species of shrew from the genus of white-toothed shrews ( Crocidura ). It occurs in central to southern China as well as in the adjacent northeastern India , in Thailand , Laos and the north of Vietnam .

features

With a head-trunk length of 5.4 to 9 centimeters, Crocidura vorax is one of the medium-sized shrews in Eurasia . The tail reaches a length of 41 to 51 millimeters. The rear foot is 11 to 14 millimeters long. In its appearance, the species corresponds to Crocidura rapax , but it is somewhat larger and the fur on the back is clearly lighter brown with a gray band on the back, and the belly side is also lighter gray. The tail is slightly two-tone brown.

Tooth formula of the Crocidura species

The skull has a base length of about 18.8 millimeters. Like all species of the genus, the species has one incisor per half in the upper jaw and then three single-pointed teeth, a premolar and three molars . In the lower jaw, however, it has a single canine behind the incisor. In total, the animals have a set of 28 teeth. As with all white-toothed shrews, the tooth roots are not pigmented in contrast to those of the red- toothed shrews.

distribution

Distribution area (red-brown) of Crocidura vorax according to the IUCN.

Crocidura vorax occurs in central to southern China as well as in the adjacent northeastern India , in Thailand , Laos and the north of Vietnam . It is likely also found in Myanmar , but has not yet been documented in the country.

Way of life

As with many shrew species, the way of life of Crocidura vorax is largely unexplored; almost no data is available here. In China it is probably a highland species, the type was discovered in a mountain forest on the Ssu Shan at an altitude of 4000 meters and in Laos one individual was caught in the evergreen rainforest near Ban Taong and another in the lowlands at heights of 200 to 300 meters . The species can probably live in different habitats accordingly, but its adaptability to habitat changes is not known. Like all shrews, this species feeds on invertebrates, mostly insects and worms.

Systematics

Crocidura vorax is classified as an independent species within the genus of white-toothed shrews ( Crocidura ), which consists of around 170 species. The first scientific description comes from G. Allen from 1923, who described an individual from the area around Lijiang in the province of Yunnan in the south of the People's Republic of China. Crocidura vorax was formerly classified together with other species such as Crocidura rapax in the species Crocidura gueldenstaedtii , Crocidura russula or Crocidura pullata .

Today, apart from the nominate form Crocidura vorax vorax, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Threat and protection

Crocidura vorax is classified as not endangered (least concern) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its large distribution area, large populations and the unknown threat to the population. If the type depends on undisturbed forest stands, it can be affected locally by timber harvesting, clearing and conversion of forest areas into agriculturally used areas and settlement areas.
