The story of Nana S. (Original title: Vivre sa vie ) is a black and white film by Jean-Luc Godard from 1962.

action

The film tells the story of 22-year-old Nana who ends up in prostitution due to lack of money and finally dies in a planned trade with her pimp. A total of 12 scenes are shown, separating the subtitles. Most of the scenes are long dialogues between Nanas and various male acquaintances, girlfriends, customers or even chance encounters. Most of the dialogues take place in a wide variety of cafés. A dialogue is a lengthy conversation Nanas had with the philosopher Brice Parain .

background

In addition to the study-like representation of different dialogues, the modeling of Nana's face is the focus of the film. Nana speaking, silent, interested, disinterested, smiling, sad, concentrated, lost - in many ways the film appears to be an exploration of the cinematic possibilities of portraying a woman's face. The actress of Nana, Anna Karina , was the wife of the director Jean-Luc Godard from 1961 to 1968 and worked before her acting career a. a. as a model for Coco Chanel and Pierre Cardin .

criticism

“The film, which is divided into twelve chapters by subtitles, is Godard's first attempt to replace the usual film narration with a film essay. The frequent discrepancy between image and sound as well as the seemingly arbitrary juxtaposition of opposing stylistic devices (rigid and movable camera, assembly and plan sequences, fade-out and cut) keep the viewer at a distance and force them to think for themselves instead of empathizing. By applying Brecht's theory of epic theater to film, Godard made the most radical break with classic narrative cinema up to that point (1962!). "
