Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences

The Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences ( Chinese  上海社会科学院 , English Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) ), which is headed by Wang Ronghua, was founded in 1958 and is the oldest and, in addition to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, the largest institution for the humanities and social sciences in the People's Republic of China . In addition to financing the SASS through funds from the Shanghai city ​​government , the SASS draws its money from various non-governmental donors at home and abroad.

As a leading think tank and respected academic institution in China, the SASS issues a number of publications that have a significant influence on politics and society . The SASS has 15 institutes and 19 interdisciplinary centers in which research is carried out on topics from the humanities and social sciences.

The focus is on the new problems that China's current social and economic development is creating. Research areas are: economy , national economy , world economy , law , literature , history , philosophy , computer science , journalism , sociology , youth research, theology , demography , international relations , national strategies and regional developments.

The SASS currently has over 700 employees, 465 of whom work in research. Among the researchers at the SASS are 124 full, 133 associate and 130 assistant professors. 287 of the professorships are held by women.

International cooperation of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences

In 2005, the Sinology Chair at FAU (Univ. Erlangen-Nürnberg) received a donation of duplicates from the holdings of the Academy of Social Sciences in the amount of 100,000 books and 10,000 bound journal volumes from 1949 to 1980. The donation became one Basis of research on the history of the People's Republic.
