Peter Braunholz, 2015

Peter Braunholz (born April 12, 1963 in Hanover ) is a German photo artist and musician with international exhibition activities, who also worked as a music producer, author, designer and industrial photographer.

The recurring theme of his work as a photo artist are explicitly photographic views of reality, which in his pictures seem unreal in many ways, but are neither staged nor manipulated ("parallel realities").

Life

Braunholz's life was shaped by music until he was 30. The musician's son initially received classical piano training. After graduating from the Lessing-Gymnasium in Frankfurt / Main, he studied at the Musicians Institute of Technology in Los Angeles and then studied German and film studies at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. During his studies, he worked as a live and studio musician (electric bass, guitar and keyboards) and made numerous appearances across Germany, including in radio and television programs (including: Do you understand fun? (ZDF) with Harald Schmidt , as bassist for Patricia Kaas ) . From 1988 to 1992 he worked as a musician, arranger and producer in the recording studios of DMC Music Publishing in Rüsselsheim , where mainly jazz and world music productions were realized. a. with Aziza Mustafa Zadeh , Christoph Haberer , Stefan Bauer , RA Ramamani and Elena Kamburova . Together with Ingo Werner Braunholz produced the CD “Kiran” by RA Ramamani and the Karnataka College of Percussion in the Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg. During this time, there was also a collaboration with the photographer Abisag Tüllmann , who made artist portraits. He also completed workshops for graphic design and photography.

Self-taught, he deepened his knowledge of design and photography from 1991 and opened his own studio in Frankfurt am Main in September 1993. As a result, he realized numerous communication projects (corporate design, print products, exhibition stands, websites, radio spots) for companies, including Bilfinger Berger , Daimler , De Beukelaer , Infraserv Höchst , Deutsche Telekom , Porsche , Roche and Stollwerck . He also photographed architecture, plants and machines for industry. For the Frankfurter Societäts-Verlag (FAZ) he worked as an author, designer and photographer.

From 1999 he concentrated increasingly on photographic art. While traveling through Europe, as well as New Zealand , South Africa and the United States, he took photographs of nature and architecture, from which he designed books and had them printed in small editions. The first solo exhibitions followed in the Frankfurt area. From 2008 he was represented by the Cologne gallery Jones, then by the galleries Judith Andreae in Bonn , Julia Philippi in Heidelberg , Wesner in Konstanz , Anja Knoess in Cologne and Mäder in Basel . In his first exhibition in Cologne, his photographs were shown alongside works by Andreas Gursky , Candida Höfer , Thomas Ruff and Vik Muniz . Since then, his work has been represented internationally in exhibitions, fairs and collections and has received numerous international awards.

From 2010 to 2014 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Abisag Tüllmann Foundation and a member of the jury for the Abisag Tüllmann Prize.

Through the mediation of the Sino-German curator Juan Xu , he received a scholarship in 2013 including an exhibition at the Huantie Times Art Museum in Beijing and lecturing at the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang .

In 2015 he exhibited for the first time in Italy as a finalist of the Arte Laguna Prize at the Arsenale di Venezia and one of his works was selected for a presentation at the Musée du Louvre in Paris. In 2016 Braunholz was a finalist of the LensCulture Awards in San Francisco with his pan-European work “Topophilia”. As a result, "Topophilia" was shown at numerous photo festivals and exhibitions around the world. In 2016 he was appointed to the jury of the IPOTY Awards. Kehrer Verlag (Heidelberg) published his monograph “Photographic Realities / Photographic Realities” in 2017 with an essay by the former Art Cologne director Gérard Goodrow . In 2018 he was nominated for the Felix Schoeller Photography Award and was honored by the jury of the Gala / Pollux Awards in York (GB) with two first prizes for his series "Ecken" and "Topophilia" as well as architectural photographer of the year 2018. In 2019 the Galerie Mäder Basel realized the monograph “Natures”, in which Braunholz's pictures are juxtaposed with poems by the Swiss writer Werner Lutz . The book also contains an essay by Heinz Stahlhut, director of the Hans Erni Museum in Lucerne , who previously worked at the Fondation Beyeler , the Museum Tinguely and the Kunstmuseum Luzern .

Braunholz lives in Kronberg near Frankfurt am Main and in Bad Hofgastein, Austria.

Photographic work

Braunholz almost exclusively photographs landscapes and architecture, mostly in color. The stylistic diversity in his work is extraordinary - accordingly, he also describes himself as a “style denier”.

His works such as Boy you turned me or Undercover , which were created up to 2013, are mostly exposures with laser technology ( lambda prints ) on photo paper . Since 2014 his paintings are exclusively with archival pigments on Fine Art papers from Hahnemühle printed.

“The strength of the photographer Braunholz lies (...) in his conceptual understanding of the world. Because Braunholz is primarily interested in what is known as reality and how it is perceived. He is primarily concerned with the photographic view of parallel realities, which does not - as is so often the case with other artists - have to lead to a kind of dichotomy between dream and reality, fiction and fact ... This is not about the fantastic, let alone Surreal, but at the same time a documentary and abstract look at things and their essence, their essence (...) Through his special eyesight, which is defined by his extremely sensitive view of the world, Peter Braunholz creates snapshots that we as viewers Allow insights into a multitude of other parallel realities. "

- Gérard A. Goodrow

“Peter Braunholz from Frankfurt has a special approach to photography based on a unique understanding of the medium. In contrast to the staged or largely computer-constructed works of renowned colleagues such as Jeff Wall or Thomas Ruff , his works are based on a comparison between the reality that surrounds us and artificially created illusions (...) Braunholz is about more than the mere recording of objects and events , he is on the track of the secret connections and connections in real life. "

- Juan Xu

“The camera selects its sections of reality in such a way that it undermines our expectations. And from the factually found something distilled out - mind you, without digital intervention - that quite decidedly defines a reality by its own grace, a counter-reality. "

- Roland hero

"In essence, my aim is to make levels of reality visible that we cannot see with the naked eye."

- Peter Braunholz

Braunholz's works have seen considerable increases in value on the art market in a relatively short period of time. In 2010 the mezzanine foundation for art in Liechtenstein was purchased . Braunholz 'works can be found internationally in museums (Huantie Times Art Museum Beijing and others), corporate collections (Kali und Salz AG and others) and numerous private collections, mainly in German-speaking countries, France and the USA.
