Jessica Backhaus (2015)

Jessica Backhaus (born 1970 in Cuxhaven ) is a German-American photographer. Her work focuses on objects and situations of everyday life, which she documents and stages in brightly colored photographs.

Life

Backhaus grew up in Berlin. At the age of sixteen she went to Paris as an exchange student, but did not return from there and began studying visual communication there after graduating from high school. In 1990 she began to study the writings and works of Gisèle Freund , two years later she met Freund personally at a conference. The women became friends and at the same time Freund developed into a mentor for Backhaus.

Backhaus finished her studies in 1995 and moved to New York where she assisted various photographers and developed her own projects. During this time she regularly traveled to her mother in Poland and took numerous photos there. A photo book compiled from it was published in 2005 under the title Jesus and the Cherries and ensured her breakthrough. In 2008 the band What Still Remains followed and in 2009 the band One Day in November , which she dedicated to Gisèle Freund, who had died eight years earlier. Backhaus returned to Germany from the USA in 2009.
