history

View from the White Tower

The building at Löwengasse 15 at the corner of Dorotheenstrasse was built in 1708 as a residence for the Hesse-Homburg government councilor , historical researcher and discoverer of the Saalburg Roman fort, Elias Neuhof.

Originally detached, two-storey house with mansard roof has with Eckquaderung combined facades and elegant in red sandstone hewn portal to the courtyard. Over time, the building was owned by well-known personalities such as Kasimir Wilhelm von Hessen-Homburg and Freiherr Creuz von Wuertz (the alchemical advisor to Friedrich III ). The historical Baroque ensemble is located opposite the Erlöserkirche and only a few meters from the east gate of the Bad Homburg Palace Gardens and is a cultural monument for reasons of local and architectural history.

In 1775, the later Homburg diplomat Isaac von Sinclair (1775-1815) was born in the house , who successfully represented the Landgraviate of Hesse-Homburg at the Congress of Vienna . He was a friend of the poet Friedrich Hölderlin .

The dilapidated late baroque ensemble, threatened with demolition, was acquired by Altana AG in 1978 on the initiative of Herbert Quandt , restored and named after Sinclair. Since opening in May 1982, the Sinclair House has shown changing exhibitions of national and international art from the 20th and 21st centuries with a focus on the theme of "nature". Each exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive program of literature and music, science and art. In 2002, the house was closed for a further thorough renovation, the planned exhibitions were shown in the Städelsche Kunstinstitut and in the Museum Giersch in Frankfurt am Main. Since the merger of the ALTANA Kulturstiftung with the Nantesbuch Foundation in 2017, the museum has been continued under the umbrella of the Nantesbuch Foundation , which was founded by Susanne Klatten . Andrea Firmenich was the managing director until October 31, 2019 . From February 15, 2020, Kathrin Meyer (previously at the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden ) will succeed her.
