Susanne Hanna Ursula Klatten , née Quandt , (born April 28, 1962 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ) is a German entrepreneur and the richest woman in Germany.

Origin and education

Susanne Klatten is the daughter of the industrialist Herbert Quandt and his third wife Johanna . In 1978 an attempt at kidnapping her and her mother was prevented by the police. After the death of her father in 1982, she inherited his fortune, including shares in BMW, together with her mother and brother Stefan .

After graduating from the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Bad Homburg, Susanne Klatten completed training as an advertising clerk at the Young & Rubicam agency in Frankfurt am Main from 1981 to 1983 . She then studied business administration at the University of Buckingham in England . After an internship at Deutsche Bank AG and an MBA - studying at IMD in Switzerland, Lausanne , she completed under the pseudonym Susanne Kant another internship at the BMW plant in Regensburg . There she met her future husband Jan Klatten, brother of the economic and media manager Werner E. Klatten .

Susanne Klatten has been an honorary senator of the Technical University of Munich since 2004 and a member of its university council since 2005. In 2009 she donated around 10 million euros to this university to establish the Susanne Klatten endowed chair for empirical educational research at the TUM School of Education .

Klatten received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 2005 and the Bavarian Order of Merit in 2007 .

It is one of the largest party donors to the CDU and FDP .

Private life

She has three children with Jan Klatten and lives in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe . The separation from her husband became known on June 30, 2018.

In 2007 and 2008, Susanne Klatten was the victim of an attempt at extortion after an affair; The accused Helg Sgarbi was sentenced to six years imprisonment in 2009 for commercial fraud and attempted commercial blackmail . In 2014, the case was retraced in the TV movie In the Trap .

Together with BMW AG, which announced on November 18, 2011 the increase in the stake in SGL Carbon from 5.16% to 15.16%, Susanne Klatten is pursuing a joint industrial strategy to make a takeover offer to the remaining shareholders of SGL Carbon to avoid. At the same time, regardless of her position as a major shareholder in BMW, she controls SGL Carbon as a private investor together with the Munich-based automobile manufacturer, which already operates a joint venture with the SGL Group . She has been chairwoman of the SGL Carbon supervisory board since April 2013.

In October 2012, Klatten and her subsidiary SKion invested in the waste oil processor Avista Oil AG . With the 30 percent stake in Avista Oil, SKion has become the second largest shareholder. In 2015, she also acquired a stake in Lonrho , a company focused on investing in Africa, through her investment company SKion .

As the owner of SKion and Altana - which together own 46 percent - Klatten has also been a shareholder in Landa Digital Printing, a company of the Israeli entrepreneur and inventor Benny Landa in the field of digital printing and nanotechnology, since 2018.

In the water treatment she is also involved with SKion, through investments in manufacturers of treatment plants.
