Christiane Benner (born February 9, 1968 in Aachen ) is a German sociologist and trade union official . In 2015 she was elected to the top management of the IG Metall industrial union as the first woman in the 125-year history of the industrial union .

Professional development

After graduating from high school in 1987 in Bensheim , Christiane Benner trained as a foreign language secretary at Carl Schenck, where she stayed until 1993 . She then studied sociology at the Philipps University in Marburg . She then spent time in North Manchester , Indiana and the University of Chicago and earned a Bachelor of Arts . She graduated from the University of Frankfurt with a diploma.

After Benner had worked in various functions for IG Metall since 1997, she was elected vice-boss on October 20, 2015 with 91.9 percent of the votes. After 125 years of existence of the union, she is the first woman in the top management of the largest single union in the world. The Tagesspiegel reported on their election under the heading "IG Metall dares the revolution".

Benner sits on the supervisory boards of BMW and Continental .

Benner is married and a member of the SPD .
