Manfred Schoch
Manfred Schoch (born October 22, 1955 in Schwäbisch Hall ) is a German trade unionist ( IG Metall ). He is chairman of the works council in Munich as well as of the general and euro works council and deputy chairman of the supervisory board of BMW AG .
Life
After completing his studies with a degree in industrial engineering at the University of Karlsruhe (TH), Schoch joined BMW AG as a trainee in 1980. After the 18-month trainee period, Schoch became assistant to Kurt Golda, who was then Chairman of the General Works Council . In 1987, he replaced Golda as chairman of the works council in Munich and then as chairman of the general works council.
With the introduction of a large number of different working time models at BMW AG, Schoch has earned a reputation as an efficient working time expert. For example, a complex working time model developed by him in 2001 was able to compensate for the cost disadvantage compared to foreign locations and thus the decision to build a new BMW plant in Leipzig was made. The BMW plant in Leipzig, which opened in 2005, represents the last new construction of a plant in the automotive industry in Germany to date.
One of Schoch's particular concerns is the reduction of the number of temporary workers. In 2012, within the framework of the company agreement “Strategic Flexibility of BMW AG”, he was able to cope with reduced demand without reducing the permanent workforce. a. achieve the stipulation of a maximum temporary worker quota and the takeover of around 3000 temporary workers at BMW AG.
The works council in Munich under Schoch took a further step towards making working hours more flexible at BMW at the beginning of 2014. With the company agreement on "BMW mobile work", which is also observed beyond the automotive industry, a location-independent and time-flexible form of teleworking was introduced, which is in particular due to the explicit right to Unreachability sets itself apart from other models of teleworking. The company agreement on BMW mobile work was awarded the Personnel Management Award of the Federal Association of Personnel Managers and the “German Works Council Prize 2014” in gold.
At the beginning of 2016 he announced in a portrait in the FAZ that he would run again in the next works council elections in 2018.
With his list “Team IG Metall BMW - Manfred Schoch” he achieved almost 86 percent of the seats in the works council election in March 2018 and won all four new seats in the works council, which has grown to 63 members.
In May 2018, Schoch warned emphatically against leaving the technological leadership in electromobility to China. In this context, he called on the European auto industry to build its own battery factories in order to keep this technology and the considerable added value share in Europe: "Anyone who does not master this future technology will be out of the window at some point."
Schoch is the longest-serving general works council chairman in the German automotive industry.
Schoch said in the context of the discussion about the collectivization proposals by Kevin Kühnert : "This SPD is no longer eligible for workers in German companies", although the "transfer of key industries and other market and economically dominant companies into common ownership" is the declared aim of IG Metall.
