Karl-Ludwig Kley (born June 11, 1951 in Munich ) is a German manager . From 1998 to 2006 he was a member of the Executive Board of Lufthansa AG. As chairman of the Executive Board of Merck KGaA , he was of the 29 April 2016 Stefan Oschmann replaced.

Life

Kley completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk at Siemens AG and studied law in Munich from 1974 to 1979. After completing his legal traineeship in Hamburg and Johannesburg , he worked at Bayer AG since 1982 in the corporate finance department and as assistant to the CEO. At the same time, he completed his doctorate in 1986 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. After spending time abroad as Chief Financial Officer at Bayer in Japan , he held various management positions in sales in the Pharmaceuticals division from 1987 to 1991. From 1994 to 1997 he headed Bayer’s pharmaceuticals business in Italy. He then took over the management of finance and investor relations at Bayer headquarters . In 1998, Kley moved to the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG as Chief Financial Officer . There he was responsible for the areas of investor relations, finance, accounting and group balance sheets, taxes, insurance, group purchasing, investments and economic cooperation. In September 2006 he left Lufthansa at his own request and joined the management of Merck KGaA, which he became Chairman on April 27, 2007. He succeeded Michael Römer . Since 2004 Kley has been a member of the shareholders' council of E. Merck OHG (later KG), in which the Merck family bundles their shares in Merck KGaA. On April 29, 2016, Kley handed over the chairmanship of the management to Stefan Oschmann .

During his nine-year tenure at Merck, sales grew from EUR 6.3 billion in 2006 to EUR 15.0 billion in 2016, profit from EUR 1.0 billion to EUR 1.6 billion and the number of employees from 29,999 to 50,414. Acquisitions made a major contribution to this growth . The most important were the Swiss biotechnology company Serono (2007) and the two US life science companies Millipore (2010) and Sigma-Aldrich (2015). Merck has been listed on the DAX since June 2007. He retired on April 29, 2016.

Between 2007 and 2016, Kley held various management positions in industry associations. From 2012 to 2014 he was President of the Association of the Chemical Industry (VCI) and Vice President of the Federal Association of German Industry (BDI). During his presidency, he published the book Germany Needs Chemistry in May 2014 . He has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board at E.ON since 2016 and Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Lufthansa since September 2017.

Kley is married and has a son, Friedrich Kley. Karl-Ludwig Kley's father Gisbert was a member of the Management Board of Siemens AG from 1964 to 1973. Kley has four brothers and one sister. His older brother is Max Dietrich Kley .

Functions

Kley was a member of various supervisory boards, including Amadeus Global Travel Distribution SA (1998 to 2006), MAN AG (2005 to 2007) and Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA (2007 to 2016). He is currently Chairman of the Supervisory Board of E.ON SE and Lufthansa AG, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of BMW AG , and on the Board of Directors of Verizon Communications Inc., New York.
