Louis Merck (born November 8, 1854 in Darmstadt ; † September 15, 1913 there ) was a German chemist and entrepreneur.

Life

Louis Merck was the son of Carl Merck (1823–1885) and his wife Marie, née Hoffmann (1824–1899) from Altenburg near Alsfeld. After studying chemistry , Louis Merck joined his father's company in 1883, a business association known as E. Merck , where he initially became head of the research department. From 1897 until his death, Louis Merck headed the company. In his era, the company moved from the center of the city to the north of Darmstadt. At the time, the company had almost a monopoly on some active ingredients, such as santonin and cocaine .

Louis Merck was married to Emmy, née Eigenbrodt, (1862–1948) from Darmstadt. They had four children together: Karl (1886–1968), Louis (1887–1945), Franz (1893–1965) and Marei (1890–1968).

Louis Merck was buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt (grave site: III wall 93).

Member of the state parliament

In 1905 he was appointed by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig as a lifelong member of the first chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse , to which he belonged until 1913.

Honors

Merck received an honorary doctorate from the University of Giessen in 1907 and was given the title of Privy Councilor of Commerce .
