Emanuel August Merck (born July 30, 1855 in Darmstadt ; † February 26, 1923 ) was a German chemist , pharmacist and entrepreneur.

Emanuel August Merck was the son of Georg Franz Merck and his wife Anna, nee Schenck. After finishing school, Merck first went to Bad Nauheim to train as a pharmacy. He passed the assistant examination in 1875. He then worked as a pharmacy assistant in Geneva and Würzburg , among others , as well as in his father's Engel pharmacy. He then began studying pharmacy in Strasbourg and later in Würzburg . In Würzburg he also got the pharmaceutical state examination. He then studied in Freiburg still chemistry . In 1883 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . In the same year he took over the Engel pharmacy and became a partner in E. Merck , a business association. From 1901 to 1906 he was the first chairman of the Association of German Chemists (today: Society of German Chemists , GDCh) and was one of the founding members of the association. Merck was awarded the title of Privy Medical Councilor. Under his leadership, the number of Merck employees rose from around 250 to 4,000.

Emanuel Merck's signature was registered as a word mark in 1912 and used as a trademark until around 1924 .

Emanuel August Merck was married to Elisabeth "Els", née Rieger (1864–1909) from Darmstadt. His wife was a daughter of the theologian and Germanist Maximilian Rieger , who was a great-nephew of the playwright Friedrich Maximilian Klinger and a student of the classical philologist Christian Ludwig Boßler .

Both had four children together: Elisabeth (1886–1964), Georg (1887–1945), Fritz (1899–1969) and Anna Luise (1892–1974). Through her great, great, grandmother Anna Barbara Boßler, "Els" Merck nee. Rieger has a genealogical connection to the Boßler family .

Emanuel August Merck was a member of the Teutonia Würzburg Landsmannschaft . He also founded the Merck family magazine in 1913.

Honors

Merck received honorary doctorates from the University of Gießen (1918) and the TH Darmstadt .
