Karl Esselborn

Karl Esselborn (born February 1, 1879 in Stuttgart , † March 18, 1940 in Darmstadt ) was a German librarian and homeland researcher .

Life

Karl Esselborn was born as the son of the engineer Prof. Karl Esselborn (1852–1937) and his wife Adela, b. Dittler (1856–1929), born in February 1879 in Stuttgart. The following year the family moved to Darmstadt, where the father finally became a lecturer at the Darmstadt State Building Trade School .

Esselborn was a student at the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium and graduated from high school there. He then studied modern languages ​​and literature at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and later switched to law . He completed his studies in Gießen in 1901 with the 1st state examination. This was followed in 1902 the doctorate to Dr. jur. with a dissertation on ministerial responsibility in the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

After working as a court assessor and after completing his military service as a one-year volunteer , he joined the Grand Ducal Court Library in Darmstadt in 1904 as an accessist . In 1905 he was appointed assistant librarian and in April 1912 he was appointed librarian.

Esselborn took part in the First World War and made it up to Rittmeister as an officer .

In 1922 he was awarded the title of professor by the University of Giessen. The following year he received his doctorate there for Dr. phil. with a thesis on German Catholicism . From August 1935 until his death at the age of 61, he was director of the Hessian State Library . Here he succeeded Hanns Wilhelm Eppelsheimer , who was put into early retirement in autumn 1933 for political reasons . He was particularly interested in the legal deposit. As director in Darmstadt, he worked on the "Law on the delivery of free copies of printed works to the Darmstadt State Library" from 1937. In his academic work, Esselborn dealt with topics from Hessian history and cultural history.

Karl Esselborn died on March 18, 1940 in Darmstadt. He was buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt (grave site: IB 137). He was born in 1906 with Wilhelmine. Ebel married. From this marriage the daughter Helma Adele and the sons Karl Alfred and Karl Wilhelm emerged.
