Willy Merck

Willy Merck (born June 27, 1860 in Darmstadt ; † December 15, 1932 there ) was a German chemist and entrepreneur .

Life

Willy Merck was the son of Georg Franz Merck (1825–1873) and his wife Anna Merck nee Schenk (1830–1908). He studied chemistry and was in Kiel in 1886 with the theme About cocaine doctorate .

Merck was married to Mathilde, called "Tilla", née Nothwang (born September 8, 1864 in Frankfurt am Main; † March 29, 1958). The couple had three children together: Emely (1891–1978), Hildegard (1892–1982) and Magda (1900–1956).

After the death of his brother Emanuel August Merck , who died in 1923 , Willy Merck was the last of his generation to take over the management of E. Merck (now Merck KGaA ).

In 1897/1898 Merck had the renowned architect Emanuel von Seidl built the Merck Villa in Darmstadt . Today the building belongs to the city of Darmstadt.

His wife Mathilde Merck financially supported the ariosophical Edda society , the ancestral inheritance of the SS and the National Socialist functionary Herman Wirth. The catalog of the Dr. W. Merck dedicated it to Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler with the words:

"The President of the Ahnenerbes, Reichsführer of the SS Heinrich Himmler, dedicates this book with a happy outlook to the great future of the Aryan-Germanic-German race with grateful devotion."

Honors

In 1905 Merck received an honorary doctorate from the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg .
