Michael Römer (born December 23, 1946 in Oberellenbach , Hessen ) is a German chemist and manager.

Michael Römer grew up in Offenbach am Main . Up to the age of 16 he played soccer at Kickers Offenbach . However, a serious knee injury ended his hobby prematurely. His father was an engineer at Hoechst AG . He has a sister and a brother.

Römer studied chemistry at the TH Darmstadt from 1968 . He finished his studies in 1977 with a doctorate . In 1978 he started at Merck in Darmstadt as laboratory manager in the ZLI (central laboratory for industrial chemicals). From 1983 to 1988 he then worked in the Central Process Development department (ZVE) and then went to the US subsidiary EM Industries . After a market study, he took over the Curing & Printing Chemicals product group . In 1990 he went back to the company's Darmstadt headquarters, where he became head of the industrial chemicals division. The division included the liquid crystals business field , a product group that was still quite weak in sales at the time. In 1993, Römer became a deputy member of the management of what was then E. Merck oHG (from 1995 Merck KGaA ). A year later he became a full member of the management board and, in 2000, deputy chairman of the management board. After the surprising departure of Bernhard Scheuble , Chairman of the Management Board of Merck KGaA, on November 20, 2005, Römer became his successor. At the same time, Römer became a member of the management board of E. Merck OHG. After leaving the management of Merck KGaA on April 27, 2007, Römer was elected to the management board of E. Merck OHG one day later. His successor as Chairman of the Management Board of Merck KGaA was Karl-Ludwig Kley .

From 2000 to 2009, Römer was also President of the Darmstadt Chamber of Commerce .

Römer is married and has three children.
