Johann Anton Merck

Johann Anton Merck (born September 9, 1756 in Darmstadt ; † June 1, 1805 there ) was a German pharmacist .

biography

Johann Anton Merck was the son of the owner of the Engel pharmacy in Darmstadt, Johann Justus Merck (1727–1758) and his wife Anna Sophie Adolphine nee Dern (1736–1758). Merck, who was a Protestant denomination, married Christiane Ernestine, born in Dornberg on July 7, 1782 in Dornberg (born December 26, 1764, † August 27, 1783 in Darmstadt), the daughter of the bailiff in Dornberg Ernst Elwert and the Marie Johannette von Passern.

In his second marriage, he married on January 22, 1789 in Arheilgen Adelheid Charlotte Henriette Louise born Merck (born September 8, 1771 in Darmstadt; † March 27, 1845 ibid), the daughter of Johann Heinrich Merck and Louise Charbonnier. From this marriage the sons Franz Rudolf Merck (1792-1835), court clerk in Darmstadt and Heinrich Emanuel Merck (1794-1855), chemist and entrepreneur emerged. Louise Marie Adelheid Merck (1797–1838) was his daughter.

Johann Anton Merck was enrolled at the University of Strasbourg in 1776 . He was a student with Johann Heinrich Klaproth in Berlin and trained as a pharmacist with Saltzwedel in Frankfurt am Main, Spielmann in Strasbourg and Rose in Berlin.

Merck became the owner of his father's Engel pharmacy in Darmstadt (privilege of 1769). In 1780 he became head of the pharmacy. He was a chamber and medical assessor at the State Economics Deputation in Darmstadt. After his death, his widow ran the Engel pharmacy.
