Christoph Wilhelm Ludwig Merck (born October 11, 1833 in Darmstadt ; † January 12, 1899 there ) was a German chemist and entrepreneur .

Life

Wilhelm Merck was the youngest son of Heinrich Emanuel Merck (1794–1855) and his wife Magdalena Merck née Hoffmann (1797–1877) from Darmstadt.

After studying chemistry he joined in 1860 in his father's company one of the company E. Merck existing business law firm , one. From 1885 until his death in 1899, he headed the oldest open partnership (ie, a partner in the general partnership E. Merck) the company. From 1882 to 1896 he was President of the Darmstadt Chamber of Commerce .

Wilhelm Merck was married to Caroline, called “Lina”, née Moller (1841–1909) from Darmstadt. They had two sons together: Carl Emanuel (1862-1909) and Georg (e) (1867-1926).
