Origin and life

family

Christian Ludwig Boßler came from the originally forested part of the South Hessian family Boßler and was born in Darmstadt as the son of the master shoemaker Georg Ludwig Boßler (1784–1863), a son of the hunter and riding owner Georg Konrad Boßler (1743–1793) from Reinheim , and his wife Dorothee Boßler b. Nold (1787–1855), a daughter of the shoemaker Christian Ludwig Nold, was born.

Since 1838 he was with Mathilde Hegar († 1895), the daughter of the Hesse-Darmstadt court medicus Dr. Johann August Hegar (1794–1882), married. With his wife he had two sons, Ludwig (1838-1913) and Karl Boßler (1840-1890), who were also high school teachers. Through his son Karl Boßler, Christian Ludwig Boßler was the grandfather of General Senior Physician Dr. Carl Boßler (* 1872; † 1951), who can be found in the master list of the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy . Christian Boßler was also the brother-in-law of the gynecologist Alfred Hegar , whose wife Eva Hegar comes from the Merck family.

Education

After Christian Boßler passed his Abitur at Ludwig-Georg-Gymnasium, he studied philology , antiquity and history from 1827 at what was then Ludwigs University in Gießen with Professors Friedrich Gotthilf Osann and Joseph Hillebrand . From 1828 to 1830 Boßler continued his studies at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen with a focus on classical philology.

The circle of his friends in Göttingen closed around Heinrich Ludolf Ahrens , Ernst von Leutsch and Friedrich Wilhelm Schneidewin . The professors who shaped Christian Boßler during his studies in Göttingen were Karl Otfried Müller and Georg Ludolf Dissen .

Two years later, Boßler moved to Berlin . There he immersed himself in the study of archeology . His professors there were among others Karl Lachmann , Heinrich Ritter and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel .

His doctorate as Dr. phil. with the dissertation: De gentibus et familiis Atticae sacerdotalibus , he submitted as Christianus Ludovicus Bossler on December 30, 1832 at the University of Giessen.

Teaching at the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium

After completing his doctorate, Christian Ludwig Boßler became an assistant teacher at the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium Darmstadt, the school where he himself had passed the Abitur.

In 1833 he was accepted as a full high school teacher in the college, followed on June 23, 1853 by being awarded the title of professor and on May 5, 1858 Christian Boßler was appointed director of the humanistic institution. He succeeded Julius Karl Friedrich Dilthey and remained as director of the traditional grammar school until January 3, 1876.

Among his many students were, for example, Chancellor Georg von Hertling and General Superintendent Wilhelm Baur , who described Christian Boßler as the best teacher he had at high school.

His former student Max Rieger also reported the following about Christian Ludwig Boßler's work as a teacher :

"What he had studied had become a personality-building power for himself: he was more than a philologist, he was a humanist."

- Max Rieger : Hessian Biographies - Volume 3, edited by Herman Haupt .

Maximilian Rieger, in turn, was a great-nephew of Friedrich Maximilian Klinger . His daughter Elisabeth married the pharmacist Emanuel August Merck . According to the results of family research from the Odenwald, Max Rieger himself has the mill owner Johannes Klinger from Pfaffen-Beerfurth and his wife Anna Barbara Boßler as ancestors.

Honors and medals

A scholarship at the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium Darmstadt was named after Christian Ludwig Boßler . The auditorium of the grammar school was also adorned with a bust of the director Boßler, during whose term of office the number of students at the humanistic educational institute he ran tripled. His students called the learned high school director Dopp because of his well-groomed appearance , which refers to pomad pot.

On August 25, 1864, Boßler was awarded the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous with the rank of Knight's Cross, First Class. On his retirement , Professor Dr. phil. Christian Boßler was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Ludwig Order on January 3, 1876, in recognition of his achievements , which was considered the highest order decoration of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .
