In addition, after Heinrich Johann Merck (* 1770 Schweinfurt; † 1853 Hamburg), a smaller Hamburg line of merchants and senators developed.

All 217 members (as of October 2009) of the Merck family, including the 130 members of the family council , are descendants of Heinrich Emanuel Merck, who represents the sixth generation after the pharmacist Friedrich Jacob Merck (* 1621 Schweinfurt; † 1678 Darmstadt). His three sons Carl, Georg and Wilhelm are the "oldest", "middle" and "youngest" branches of the family. The tenth generation was born between 1917 and 1933, the eleventh between 1944 and 1981, the twelfth generation from 1969 and the 13th generation from 2002.
