Jon Baumhauer (born February 1, 1944 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German entrepreneur and clinical psychologist . Baumhauer was chairman of the board of E. Merck KG, which in turn is the main shareholder of the DAX company Merck KGaA .

Career

Born in Freiburg, he grew up in Munich. After graduating from the boarding school of the Benedictine Abbey of Ettal , he did his military service in the armed forces . Baumhauer studied philosophy in New York . After graduating, he worked for a short time at the university there. Then he went to Munich to study psychology and history . After completing his studies, he worked for several years at an LMU institute under Theodor Hellbrügge . He then settled down with a colleague as a clinical psychologist in Munich and worked as a psychological psychotherapist in Munich for over 20 years . At the same time, he was elected to the board of the pharmaceutical and chemical company Merck in Darmstadt in 1979. In 1989 he became deputy chairman of this body and from 1994 to 2004 chairman of the shareholders' council. In 2004 he took over the chairmanship of the family council. In 1995, the year Merck KGaA went public , he was also appointed to the company's Supervisory Board. In 2002 he became chairman of the board of E. Merck KG. This company holds 70.3% of the shares in Merck KGaA. With increasing involvement in the company, he reduced his work as a practicing psychotherapist, which he then gave up completely. Baumhauer only became known to a broader public in 2006, as part of the hostile takeover attempt of Schering AG by Merck.

Baumhauer was the top representative of the Merck family and the Merck Group. He is a direct descendant of Emanuel Merck , the founder of the Merck company and the eleventh generation of Friedrich Jacob Merck's descendants . His grandfather was Kurt Wolff . Jon Baumhauer is married and has four children.

On November 12, 2012, Baumhauer received the Luther Rose 2012 for social responsibility and entrepreneurial courage from the International Martin Luther Foundation .

On January 28, 2014, Jon Baumhauer left the family council for reasons of age. His successor as chairman of the board of E. Merck KG was Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp .
