Merck Millipore is the life science division of the pharmaceutical and chemical company Merck KGaA from Darmstadt . After the acquisition of the US Millipore Corporation , all of Merck KGaA's biotechnology activities were brought together in this division . As an independent company, Millipore was best known for its main products, filters and filter systems .
Millipore was founded in 1954 and was based in Billerica , Massachusetts . In 2009 the company employed over 6,000 people worldwide with sales of $ 1.7 billion and profits of $ 341 million.
The company was originally in the stock index Standard & Poor's 500 listed. On February 28, 2010, Merck KGaA announced that it would take over Millipore - by mutual agreement with its management - for the equivalent of 5.3 billion euros. On July 15, 2010, the acquisition of Millipore by Merck KGaA was completed and Millipore traded under the name Merck Millipore (in North America as EMD Millipore).
In 2015, Merck Millipore and Sigma-Aldrich merged. In the USA and Canada the company now operates as MilliporeSigma .
