Phi Delta Phi
Phi Delta Phi is an international student legal association founded as a Fraternity in 1869 and transformed into an Honor Society in 2012 .
Foundation, goal and character
The association was founded on December 13, 1869 by four students at the University of Michigan . It was the first organization for law students in the USA. The aim of the association is to “ promote a higher standard in professional ethics and culture at this and other law schools and in the entire professional field”. There are over 130 groups called inns in law schools in the United States , Canada , Mexico , Poland, and Germany . When they are founded, the inns are named after an important lawyer who can serve as a professional and ethical role model for the members. Since the conversion to an Honor Society, the inns have had a minimum grade point average as a criterion for admission, which limits the group of candidates for membership to the upper third.
Organizationally and in terms of the names and titles, Phi Delta Phi are based on an Anglo-Saxon court:
- A local group ( Inn ) is led by a “ Magister ”. Several " officers " are at his side.
- Several inns are brought together in a " Province ", which is led by a " Province President ", usually an alumni member.
- All Provinces is the " Council before". He runs the headquarters in Washington .
- The “ Court of Appeal ” is set up for disputes within the association .
Every two years representatives of all groups meet for a convention to determine and control the activities of the student association.
development
By the end of the 19th century, the association was already represented at 31 universities in the USA. In 1973 the first Inn outside the United States was founded at the Escuela Libre de Derecho in Mexico City , in 1983 Canada was added with the University of Ottawa , in 2000 with the Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Poland and opened in 2006 at Bucerius Law School the first German group.
In total, over 200,000 members have been accepted since the student union was founded. Lifelong membership is awarded, so that the groups of the association represent an active network between alumni and students and between users and students of the law. In addition to the active (student) members, honorary members are also accepted who are themselves lawyers of significant standing, but are no longer active students.
