Thomas Wrede

Thomas Wrede (* 1963 in Iserlohn ) is a German, internationally active photographer and artist .

Life

He completed his studies in fine arts at the Art Academy in Münster (1985 to 1991) with a master's degree . This was followed by studies with Dieter Appelt at the Udk Berlin .

1998–2005 Wrede received a teaching position for photography at the Art Academy in Münster . Since 2015 he has been teaching as a professor for photography / media at the University of Fine Arts (HBK) Essen.

Thomas Wrede's work comprises series and work groups that have developed from classic black and white photography to analog color photography to digital photography.

In 1991 Thomas Wrede began the process of wrapping tree stumps in plastic film, photographing them hundreds of times and using the analogue route to assemble them into ever new figures, the Cadavre Exquis . On the Danish island of Samsö in the early 1990s, photographs of a dark, glittering and at the same time dying landscape were taken on a landfill for agricultural films.

In 1994 he held large-format black-and-white works entitled The birds are in the air, screaming the imprints of the impact of birds on window panes, which seem to float like ghosts between the here and the hereafter, between the moment and infinity . In the Magic Feelings series , Wrede captured the moment of lust and panic on the faces of roller coaster riders.

Eventually Wrede began to look for the line between image and reality. In his Real Landscapes , for example, toy cars and small model houses are placed on the beaches of the North Sea islands and sand pits in such a way that a puddle becomes a lake and a mound of earth becomes a mountain. The photographic illusion of his illusory worlds is not caused by digital processing, but by the lack of proportions in the real landscape. In further photographic series, Thomas Wrede shows the attempt to build “realistic” landscapes in amusement parks and to give space to bourgeois spaces with natural landscape wallpapers.

Wrede's photographs found their way into art collections such as Hudson's Bay Company Global Art Collection New York, The West Collection Philadelphia, Hall Art Collection New York, ING-Collection Amsterdam, art-on-building projects in Berlin for the Federal Republic of Germany, UBS Zurich & Lucerne , DZ-Bank Frankfurt, National Museum of History and Art Luxembourg (MNHA), State Gallery Stuttgart , Museum of Photography ( Berlin State Museums ), State Museum Münster . His works have been presented at the Akademie der Künste Berlin (2015), the National Museum of History and Art Luxembourg (2013), the European Month of Photography Luxembourg (2013), the Museum Art of the West Coast , Alkersum (2010), in Seoul Museum of Art, South Korea (2011), in the Art Museum Wuhan, China (2009), at the Moscow Biennale (2009), in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum Cologne (2007).

Thomas Wrede is a member of the German Association of Artists and the German Society for Photography, DGPh. He lives in Münster .
