Moscow Biennale

The Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art ( Russian Московская биеннале современного искусства ) is an international art exhibition that has been held in Moscow , Russia, every two years since 2004 .

The first biennial entitled Dialectic of Hope took place from January 28 to February 28, 2005. The curators of the Biennale were Joseph Backstein , Daniel Birnbaum , Iara Boubnova, Nicolas Bourriaud , Rosa Martinez and Hans-Ulrich Obrist . A total of 300 artists from 21 countries took part. The central project was presented in the former Lenin Museum near Red Square .

The second Moscow Biennale took place from March 1 to April 1, 2007 in Moscow City in a high-rise building that was still under construction.

The third biennial took place from September 25th to November 1st, 2009. This time the location chosen was the Center for Modern Culture “Garage” , which opened in 2008 and is a former garage building from 1927, which was built at the time with the participation of the architect Konstantin Melnikow and the engineer Vladimir Schuchow .

The 4th Moscow Biennale for Contemporary Art from September 23 to October 30, 2011 was curated by Peter Weibel , Director of the ZKM Karlsruhe . 64 artists and 16 artist groups from 33 countries took part in the main exhibition entitled Rewriting Worlds . The exhibition venue was the ARTPLAYDesignCenter and the TSUM Art Foundation , both in Moscow. External projects in Yekaterinburg , Nizhny Novgorod , Kiev and London . Weibel has u. a. Kader Attia , Chen Chieh-jen, EVOL, Claire Fontaine, Susan Hiller , Rebecca Horn , Manabu Ikeda, Shilpa Gupta, Armin Linke, Fabián Marcaccio , Neo Rauch , Rosângela Rennó, Timo Toots, Ai Weiwei and Guido Van der Werve. Ai Weiwei showed his video Beijing: The Second Ring from 2005.

The 5th Moscow Biennale for Contemporary Art will take place from September 19 to October 20, 2013. The curator is Catherine de Zegher .

The 6th Moscow Biennale for Contemporary Art will take place from September 22nd to October 1st, 2015 in Pavilion No. 1 of the All-Russian Exhibition Center VDNKh. The main theme of the Biennale is: “How to gather? Acting in a center in a city in the heart of the Island of Eurasia ". The curators are Bart De Baere , director of MUHKA Antwerp , Defne Ayas , director of Witte de With , Rotterdam and Nicolaus Schafhausen , director of Kunsthalle Wien .
