Catherine de Zegher

Catherine de Zegher (* 1955 in Groningen ) is a Dutch art historian , curator and art critic .

life and work

Catherine de Zegher studied archeology and art history at Ghent University . From 1982 to 1987 she worked for the province West-Vlaanderen in the art patronage department in Brugge. From 1986 to 2004 Catherine de Zegher was a member of the Koninklijke Commissie voor Monumenten en Landschappen .

As co-founder and director (1988 to 1998) of the Kanaal Art Foundation in Kortrijk , Belgium, she curated the exhibition “Inside the Visible”. Catherine de Zegher was director of the Drawing Center in New York from 1999 to 2006 . From 2007 to 2009 Zegher was the artistic director of the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. De Zegher was together with Gerald McMaster director of the 18th Biennale of Sydney , Australia in 2012 and curator for the Australian pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale and the 5th Moscow Biennale in 2013 .

From November 1, 2013 to the beginning of 2019, she was director of the Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Ghent) . In March 2018, after a scandal surrounding a painting exhibition with works by the Russian avant-garde of unknown provenance, she was suspended from work and temporarily replaced by Cathérine Verleysen . In February 2019, she was dismissed with immediate effect and transferred to a leading position in the Culture and Leisure Office of the City of Ghent.

The Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art (AICA) and the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) awarded Catherine de Zegher several prizes for her work.
