Cathérine Verleysen

Cathérine Verleysen (* 1972 near Antwerp ) is a Belgian art historian . Since spring 2018 she has been interim director of the Ghent Museum of Fine Arts (Museum voor Schone Kunsten - MSK).

Career

Cathérine Verleysen studied art history and archeology at the University of Ghent , which she graduated with a master's in 1994. In addition, she obtained a Diplôme d'études approfondies (DEA) from the University of Paris IV , where she also received her doctorate in art history in 2001. In her dissertation, she examined the reception of the symbolist painter Maurice Denis in Belgium, especially in Catholic circles, and the revitalization of the country's religious art that was sought .

She began her career at the Ghent MSK in 2002 as a research assistant. Since 2014 she has headed the museum's collection and research department. She curated several exhibitions at the MSK and also worked on an exhibition at the Museum in Elsene in 2015 .

After the director of the MSK, Catherine de Zegher , was suspended from duty after a scandal over a painting exhibition with works of the Russian avant-garde of unexplained provenance, Verleysen was appointed interim director in March 2018.

Verleysen has been a member of CODART, an international network of curators of Flemish and Dutch art , since 2007 . In 2017 she was appointed to the advisory committee for the Flemish intangible and movable cultural heritage (Cultureel-erfgoeddecreet) .
