For the first time in history, a men's triathlon was held at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . The competition took place on September 17, 2000.

A total of 52 athletes from 27 nations started at the Olympic premiere. Four athletes had to end the competition early. Almost 200,000 spectators watched the competition along the route in downtown Sydney and on the harbor.

The start, finish and transition area were in front of the Sydney Opera House , where a large temporary grandstand had been set up. After swimming 1.5 kilometers in Port Jackson , they switched to bicycles. The athletes had to use it to ride six laps on a circuit through the Sydney Central Business District and the Royal Botanic Gardens . Finally, the athletes had to run a 10 km run, which also led through the Sydney Central Business District and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

The first Olympic champion was the Canadian Simon Whitfield , who prevailed in the final sprint against Stephan Vuckovic from Germany. Vuckovic, who was 52 seconds behind after swimming and was 34th, was able to make up 17 places in cycling. However, at this point his gap had grown to 63 seconds. He was able to make up for this deficit on the running track and only had to admit defeat to the Canadian 500 meters from the finish at the Opera House. The bronze medal was won by Jan Řehula from the Czech Republic.
