The Triathlon of men in the 2012 Olympics in London took place on 7 August 2012 at Park Hyde instead.

The race started with a 1.5 kilometer swim on the north side of The Serpentine . After the swim there was a 200 meter long transition area. This was followed by a circuit with seven laps, each 6.137 kilometers long, this had to be covered by bike, which resulted in a distance of 43 kilometers. The circuit led over the Serpentine Road in the direction of West Carriage Drive , before they passed Buckingham Palace and returned to the transition area. Finally, the athletes had to run 4 laps of 2.5 kilometers, i.e. a total of 10 kilometers, around The Serpentine.

Race course

The Slovak Richard Varga took the lead early on in swimming and was the first to switch with an intermediate time of 16 minutes and 56 seconds, four seconds ahead of the Spaniard Javier Gómez . Together with Iwan Wassiljew , Alessandro Fabian and the two Brownlees Alistair and Jonathan , they formed a six-man lead group with a gap of eleven seconds on the pursuers. As Jonathan Brownlee was already cycling in the transition area, he received a 15-second penalty. During the cycling, the pursuers caught up with the leading group. After the last switch to running, Briton Alistair Brownlee picked up the pace that only his brother and Javier Gómez could follow. Halfway through the run, Jonathan Brownlee couldn't keep up with the other two. With three kilometers to go, Gómez could not follow the eventual Olympic champion and ended up in second place with eleven seconds. Despite the time penalty that Jonathan Brownlee had to stop at the end of the penultimate lap, he could with an advantage of 18 seconds on the fourth-placed David Hauss secure the bronze medal. After crossing the finish line, the bronze medalist collapsed and was treated by paramedics on site. His brother criticized the time penalty very clearly and accused the International Triathlon Union of ruining the sport with such rules.
