Anna Maria Maiolino
Anna Maria Maiolino (* 1942 in Scalea , Calabria ) is an Italian - Brazilian painter , sculptor and video artist .
life and work
Anna Maria Maiolino was born in southern Italy during World War II to an Italian and an Ecuadorian . In 1954 the family emigrated to South America . In 1960 they moved from Venezuela to Rio de Janeiro . Maiolino studied painting and woodcut at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Caracas, then studied at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro and at the Pratt Graphics Center in New York. During her studies she met Antonio Dias and Rubens Gerchman . Maiolino lived in New York City from 1968 to 1971 .
Maiolino's work can be classified in the early phase with Brazilian Neo Concrete Art , New Figuration and New Objectivity , later in the vicinity of Italian Neo Avant-garde , American Minimalism and Conceptual Art .
Together with Lygia Pape , Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica , Anna Maria Maiolino participated in the 1967 exhibition Nova Objetividade Brasileira ( New Brazilian Objectivity ) at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro , which marked a turning point from the constructivist tradition to new art forms.
Anna Maria Maiolino works in various artistic disciplines and media from drawing, printing, painting to sculpture, artist books, video and performance . In 1989 Maiolino moved from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires and has worked mainly with clay since then .
The sculptures São 21 / They are 21 (2013), São 25 / They are 25 (2013), and Mais que Um / More than One (2013) from the series Preposições / Prepositions are raku ceramics . In-Out / Anthropophagy (1973) is a well-known film by Anna Maria Maiolino. The video 08/07/2013 (2013) comes from the series Present .
In 2012 Anna Maria Maioliono took part in the dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel with Here & There , a large-format sound installation .
