Lygia Pape (1957)

Lygia Pape (born April 7, 1927 in Nova Friburgo , Brazil ; † May 3, 2004 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian painter , sculptor , engraver , filmmaker and university lecturer.

life and work

Pape studied art with Fayga Ostrower at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro and in 1947 became a member of the Rio de Janeiro-based Grupo Frente, which was dedicated to concrete art and geometric abstraction. In 1959 she signed the Manifesto Neoconcreto with Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica . The advocates of the neoconcrete movement contradicted the prevailing ethos of concrete art, because they believed that art should require the active participation of the viewer. Papes early work, for example For example, the Teclares series, which consists of geometric woodcuts and was shown at the third São Paulo Biennale in 1955, refers to craftsmanship. From the 1960s onwards she worked on scriptwriting, film editing and directing. In 1967 she co-organized the exhibition New Brazilian Objectivity at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. From 1972 to 1985 she taught at the Universidade Santa Úrsula in Rio de Janeiro. In 1980 she received a master's degree in philosophy of art from the Universidade Ferdal do Rio de Janeiro, where she was appointed professor of fine arts in 1983. Her works were exhibited in Brazil and internationally, for example at the São Paulo Biennale (1953, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1989) and the Salão Nacional de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro between 1952 and 1960, as well as at the 2003 and 2009 Biennale di Venezia and 2011 at the Istanbul Biennale . In 2004 the cultural association project Lygia Pape was founded, which is led by her daughter Paula Pape.
