Nicolaus Schafhausen (* 1965 in Düsseldorf ) is a German curator and art manager and director of the Kunsthalle Wien from October 2012 to the end of March 2019 . In May 2018 he announced that he would resign his post early on March 31, 2019 for political reasons, as he sees “the future of the current nationalist politics in Austria and the European situation as to the effectiveness of cultural institutions like the Kunsthalle Wien”; In times of right-wing populist movements, much stronger support from independent state institutions and cultural institution administrations is required: in the future, he wants to work outside the usual institutions.

Life

Schafhausen studied art history at the Technical University of Berlin and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Before he decided on a career as a curator, Nicolaus Schafhausen worked as an artist and was a. a. Represented by Ascan Crone Gallery and Gasser Grunert Gallery. His last exhibition participation was at the Aperto '93 in Venice. During a scholarship in Berlin at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in 1991, he and the artist Markus Schneider founded the Lukas & Hoffmann gallery, which is named after the maiden names of their mothers. In the gallery, which was initially located in Berlin and later in Cologne, he realized his first exhibitions a. a. with Kai Althoff , Ólafur Elíasson , Carsten Höller and Lily van der Stokker.

From 1995 to 1998 Schafhausen was artistic director of the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart . In 1999 he was appointed director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein , whose artistic and commercial management he held until December 2005. In June 2005 he was appointed founding director of the European Kunsthalle in Cologne for a period of two years, a project that explores models for a potential institution of contemporary art. From 2006 to 2011 he was artistic and commercial director of the Witte de With , Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In 2007 and 2009 he was the commissioner responsible for the German pavilion at the 52nd and 53rd Biennale di Venezia . He was co-curator of the 1st Brussels Biennale 2008, curator of the Festival Media City Seoul 2010, curator for the Dutch House at the Expo in Shanghai 2010 and has exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Lenbachhaus in Munich, the National Museum of Architecture, Art and Curated design in Oslo and CCA in Vilnius. Since 2011 Schafhausen has been the strategic director of the Canadian Shorefast Foundation | Fogo Island Arts, which initiated a resident program on the Newfoundland island of Fogo and is looking for ways to revitalize the area threatened by emigration in dialogue with artists and scientists.

Schafhausen is the author and editor of numerous texts and publications on contemporary art. He was a collection advisor for the FRAC Nord - Pas de Calais and a member of the board of the IKT network (International association of curators of contemporary art). In addition, Schafhausen was a member of the board of directors of the Ursula Blickle Foundation, the Independent Curators International (ICI) and the Comite van Roosendaal. In 2003 he was awarded the Hessian Culture Prize. Schafhausen teaches at HISK, Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Gent. In 2014 he curated the 55th Belgrade October Salon at the Museum of the City of Belgrade (Muzej grada Beograda) together with Vanessa Joan Müller .
