life and work

De Boer studied at the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam from 1985 to 1990 . She then continued her studies at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam until 1992 . De Boer was a professor at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent and now teaches at the École de recherche graphique in Brussels.

For her film portrait Presto, Perfect Sound (2006), De Boer invited the Belgian George van Dam to interpret the fourth movement (Presto) of Béla Bartók's Sonata for Solo Violin Sz117 . De Boer recorded six performances by the violinist and cut from them a single, the “perfect” version. The visual concert recording is assigned to the technically almost perfect violin playing on the sound track. In the visual course of the concert, the manipulation of the sound track creates disturbances. Another work by Manon de Boer is Two Times 4'33 ” (2007). The Belgian pianist Jean-Luc Fafchamps performs John Cage's composition twice in front of his audience. In Manon de Boer's film Dissonant (2010) dances Cynthia Loemij to three sonatas for solo violin by Eugène Ysaÿe . She dances in silence after the sound of the music stops.

“In her complex film arrangements, the Dutch artist Manon de Boer cleverly questions our methods of perception. Her films, compositions of slowly flowing images in which sounds - spoken words, music, ambient noises - and silence alternate, plus repetitions and delays, build parallel listening and visual spaces around the musicians, dancers or writers performing in them. They explore the nature of memory and the presence or absence of body and ask how art can pervade the experience of being. "
