David Lamelas

David Lamelas (born December 12, 1946 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is an Argentine sculptor , conceptual artist , photographer and experimental filmmaker . He is considered one of the pioneers of conceptual art of the 1960s and 1970s.

life and work

David Lamelas trained as a sculptor in Argentina. In 1968 he achieved international fame when he represented Argentina at the Venice Biennale with the work " Office of Information about the Vietnam War on Three Levels: The Visual Image, Text and Audio ". In Venice he made the acquaintance of Marcel Broodthaers and the gallery owner of Wide White Space in Antwerp .

Because of these acquaintances, Lamelas moved to London . There he studied at the St. Martins School of Art with a scholarship for sculpture . There he also began to work with photographs and text material in order to expand the concept of sculpture for himself. At the same time he started making films. The main interest of his artistic work became the preoccupation with time, space and language. In the 1970s David Lamelas lived and worked alternately in Europe and America.

David Lamelas became one of the pioneers of conceptual art in the 1960s and 1970s. He has produced a comprehensive body of films and videos. He often worked without editing and editing in order to create a continuous, narrative and uncut documentary in the film.

In 1969 he began to shoot an experimental film series in Düsseldorf . In this film series “ Time as Activity ”, he filmed everyday events with a fixed camera at three different locations in the city. The films left entirely up to the viewer what they associate with what was being filmed. Lamelas continued the film project for more than four decades, with other locations besides Düsseldorf in Berlin , Los Angeles, Warsaw and New York City .

In 1972 he participated in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Individual Mythologies : Film department with the 16 mm film " Cumulative Script " .

David Lamela's art deals with dealing with time and space. In his projects, which consist of films, photographs , installations and " interventions ", he deals with the question of the limits of the temporality of art and its possibilities for generating alternative processes of communication and knowledge. Since the late 1960s he has participated in major exhibitions and projects as an individual artist or in group exhibitions around the world. In 2017 he took part in documenta 14 .

Lamelas lives in Los Angeles ( USA ), Buenos Aires and Paris .
