Art management

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Art management is a collective term: Art management in the functional sense deals with the management and administration of organizations and companies in the field of visual arts , music , performing arts , and film and media art . Art managers in the institutional sense see themselves as people with predominantly organizational or managerial activities in the cultural and art industries, in the state , municipal and private sectors.

The term is used at will: some advertising agencies call it art management to create an art-friendly image for a company ; some event managers call it art management to organize the flow of an art event; sometimes artist management for individual artists is referred to as art management.

Definitions and demarcations

The generic term for art management is cultural management . Cultural management does not refer to culture as a whole, but in a narrower sense to " institutions , initiatives and projects in which art is created, art results are celebrated or ritualized , art-related entertainment is offered for sale or aesthetic practice is stimulated."

Similarly, the term art management tends not to apply to the arts as a whole, but rather to designate management in the visual arts in a narrower sense. Art management is therefore sometimes viewed as an excerpt from cultural management for the visual arts. Accordingly, managers in the performing arts and music are more likely to see themselves as part of cultural management rather than arts management. Management functions in the performing arts and music often have their own names, some of which go back to the traditions of the theater and peculiarities of the music world:

However, some fundamentals of institutional management in all art branches are similar, and in the area of high culture, art management in the visual arts, the performing arts and music are equally subject to the highest demands in terms of scientific and artistic expertise : the decisions must be up to date be in the arts , withstand art criticism , and react to cultural-political interventions, while the financial basis can be called into question.

Especially for the contemporary arts, state, municipal or private funding means that professional, independent institutions of the visual arts, performing arts, music and literature have a decisive meaning in terms of content: the social relevance of artistic works, concepts and CVs often only becomes apparent through their presentations and publications .

tasks

The tasks lie in the area of tension between art and commerce . Art managers act between art funding, administration and budget requirements. In the private sector, investment decisions , market values , financing and profit interests have to be dealt with.

By selecting artists and works , art management influences the art that finds its way to the public. Conversely, the art manager also prevents art, namely that which he does not offer. He thus bears special responsibility with regard to the guarantee of artistic freedom ( Art. 5 Para. 3 GG ).
