Kikuta Kazuo ( Japanese 菊 田 一夫 ; born March 1, 1908 in Yokohama , Kanagawa Prefecture ; † April 4, 1973 ) was a Japanese actor and playwright.

Life

Kikuta's parents divorced shortly after his birth, so he was adopted by Kikuta Kichisaburō and took his family name.

Kikuta was best known as the author of radio series such as Kane no naru oka ( 鐘 の 鳴 る 丘 , 1947–50), Yama kara kita otoko (1945) and Kimi no na wa ( 君 の 名 は , 1952–54). He also wrote popular comedies such as Hana saku minato ( 花 咲 く 港 , 1943) and produced musical comedies in the style of Broadway , including an adaptation of My Fair Lady . In 1960 he received the Kikuchi Kan Prize for the play Gametsui yatsu , which was also filmed and produced as a television series .

Since 1975 the Kikuta Kazuo Theater Prize ( 菊 田一夫 演劇 賞 , Kikuta Kazuo engekishō ) has been awarded annually in memory of his achievements .
