Elmgreen and Dragset

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Elmgreen (born 1961; Copenhagen , Denmark ) and Ingar Dragset (born 1969; Trondheim , Norway ) have been working together as an artist duo since 1995. Her work explores the relationship between art, architecture and design.

Elmgreen & Dragset live and work in Berlin . They are known for their works of art, which are characterized by wit and subversive humor and also address social and cultural issues.

Life and work

The duo met in Copenhagen in 1994 when Michael Elmgreen, born in the city in 1961, wrote and performed poetry and the 1969 born Norwegian Ingar Dragset studied theater. They began working together in 1995 and moved to Berlin in 1997. In 2006 they bought a 1000m2 former water pumping station from 1924 in Berlin's Neukölln district from the city and converted it into a studio. In 2008 Elmgreen moved to London, in 2015 he moved back to Berlin.

Since 1997, the artists have presented a large number of architectural and sculptural installations in an ongoing series of works called 'Powerless Structures' in which they transform the conventions of the 'white cube' gallery space and create gallery buildings that hung from the ceiling, lowered into the ground or turned upside down. For the Istanbul Biennale 2001 they constructed a true-to-scale model of a typical modernist art hall , which was set into the ground outdoors between ancient ruins. Her work has also been shown at the Berlin, Istanbul, Liverpool, Moscow, São Paulo, Singapore and Gwangju biennials.

Other exhibits include the conversion of the Bohen Foundation in New York to a 13th Street subway station in 2004; her best known project 'Prada Marfa ', a Prada boutique opened in 2005 in the middle of the Texas desert and her critically acclaimed exhibition The Welfare Show 2005-2006 at the Serpentine Gallery , London / The Power Plant , Toronto / Bergen Kunsthall, Norway / BAWAG Foundation, Vienna .

For the 53rd Venice Biennale 2009 they curated the exhibition The Collectors in the neighboring Danish and Nordic pavilions (which include Norway, Sweden and Denmark), an unprecedented amalgamation of two international exhibition venues. In their exhibition they showed u. a. Works of art by artist colleagues Maurizio Cattelan , Tom of Finland , Han & Him, Laura Horelli , William E. Jones, Terence Koh , Klara Lidén , Jonathan Monk , Nico Muhly , Norway Says, Vibeke Slyngstad, Thora Dolven Balke, Nina Saunders and Wolfgang Tillmans .

In 2011 her sculpture 'Powerless Structures, Fig. 101' was selected as the winner of the Fourth Plinth Commission , which was to be exhibited on the fourth plinth in London's Trafalgar Square . Her bronze sculpture of a boy riding a rocking horse challenges the tradition that war memorials celebrate either victory or defeat. The work is now permanently installed outside the Arken Museum of Modern Art .

In 2013, they curated an extensive public art program in Munich entitled A Space Called Public / Hopefully Public and transformed the former textile galleries of the Victoria and Albert Museum into the large family home of the fictional architect Norman Swann. Her exhibition series Biography took place in 2014-2105 at the Astrup Fearnley Museet , Oslo , and at the SMK- National Gallery of Denmark , Copenhagen. In 2015, her exhibition Aéroport Mille Plateaux transformed the PLATEAU Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul into an airport, inspired by the ideas of the philosopher Gilles Deleuze .

For their solo exhibition The Well Fair in 2016, the duo transformed the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing into a fictional art fair. Also in 2016, the artists installed 'Van Gogh's Ear' at Rockefeller Center in New York; the nine meter high, empty swimming pool stands upright on its shortest side, supported by a visible structure on its back.

The artist's first major retrospective in the UK , This is How We Bite Our Tongue , took place at the Whitechapel Gallery , London, in 2018 . The exhibition consisted of a large-scale site-specific installation and a selection of her sculptural works. The 'Whitechapel Pool', which was created especially for the exhibition, transformed the first floor of the gallery into an abandoned public swimming pool, which is fictitiously dated to 1901 and is linked to the gentrification of the East End of London .

Permanent installations

In 2003 won Elmgreen & Dragset competition of the German government for a memorial in Tiergarten which was unveiled in May 2008 in Berlin to commemorate the gay victims of the Nazi regime.

Several of her sculptures are now permanently installed for the public, including the contract for the fourth plinth (Fourth Plinth ), which is now before the Arken Museum of Modern Art is; 'Prada Marfa' (2005), on US Highway 90 in Texas ; 'Dilemma', a site-specific sculpture of a boy on a high diving board overlooking a fjord on the outskirts of Oslo and 'Han', a polished steel sculpture of a young man on a rock in the middle of the harbor in Helsingor , Denmark . Han was installed in 2012 and is based on Edvard Eriksen's famous statue of the Little Mermaid . The character 'Han' sits in a similar pose, challenging traditional depictions of masculinity.

Performative works

In 2007 Elmgreen & Dragset developed 'Drama Queens' for Skulptur Projekte Münster , a play about the history of art in the 20th century with six remote-controlled versions of iconic sculptures. During the Frieze Art Fair 2008 they staged 'Drama Queens' at The Old Vic in London , this time enlivened by the voices of well-known stage stars like Kevin Spacey .

Prizes and awards

Elmgreen & Dragset were nominated for the Hugo Boss Prize in 2000, and in 2002 they won the National Gallery Prize in Hamburger Bahnhof , Berlin. The artists were awarded the Arken Art Prize in 2006. In 2009 Elmgreen & Dragset received a special mention at the Venice Biennale for 'The Collectors', their very elaborate exhibitionin theDanish and Nordic pavilion. For the same exhibition, also in 2009, they received the Critics' Prize / the Norwegian Critics Association Kunstkritikerprisen / Kunstkritikerpreis .

In 2012 they won an Eckersberg Medal and were also awarded the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Legat Prize for their exhibition in Den Frie in Copenhagen.

In 2015 they were awarded an honorary doctorate from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
