Nicolas "Nico" Asher Muhly (born August 15, 1981 in Randolph , Vermont ) is an American composer and pianist .

Life

Muhly studied English at Columbia University before studying composition at the Juilliard School with John Corigliano and Christopher Rouse . He graduated with a master's degree and then worked for Philip Glass as a programmer, editor and conductor for six years . When he was only 27, he was commissioned to write the music for the Oscar-winning film The Reader . His operas Two Boys and Marnie premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Muhly has composed more than a hundred orchestral works, works for solo instruments, songs and choral pieces, chamber music, ballet music, three operas and film music. He has been commissioned to write compositions by a number of opera houses and orchestras. a. the Metropolitan Opera, the Lincoln Center Theater (New York), the English National Opera , the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Opéra Garnier , the Music Theater Group (New York), the Gotham Chamber Opera (New York), the American Symphony Orchestra , the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra . He has also worked with musicians of various styles, including a. with Sam Amidon , Antony and the Johnsons , Ólafur Arnalds , Björk , Bruce Brubaker , Ben Frost , Philip Glass , the Grizzly Bears , Glen Hansard , Teitur Lassen , Alexi Murdoch , Sigurðsson , Usher .

Muhly is a member of the Icelandic music collective / recording label Bedroom Community. He lives in Chinatown in New York City .
